An elderly French authoress, while writing her memoirs, is narrating the story of her first love. The year of that story is 1929, the place southern Indochina. Her mother and her two brothers lived in the house that came with the mother's poor paying teaching job, while she, across the Mekong River, lived in a boarding school dormitory in Saigon. The girl had an uneasy relationship with her family, largely because of her mother's inexplicable favoritism of her eldest brother, who was selfish, egotistical and thieving. The girl and her younger timid brother secretly wished he was dead. That year, she began a relationship with a Chinaman, who she met on the Mekong River ferry. He was western educated in Paris, came from a wealthy family and as such money was no issue for him, and had never worked a day in his life. They entered into their sexual relationship nervously if only because of the taboo associated with a relationship between races, and people of their respective ages (she telling him that she was eighteen, he telling her he was thirty-two). As time progressed, they were more open to the world at least about having a relationship. Her family disapproved of what they knew she was doing, while still savoring the Chinaman's showering of money at them. They talked openly to each other about their non-existent future, as she could never marry a Chinaman, and he was already betrothed to a woman from a wealthy family, she who he would not even meet until the wedding ceremony. But both began to think that there was the possibility of a future "them", driven by their passion and desire.

Set in 1999, a woman (Dommartin) has a car accident with some bank robbers, who enlist her help to take the bank money to a drop in Paris. They want to confiscate a device his father invented which allows anyone to record their dreams and vision. On the run from both the bank robbers and the CIA, the couple span the globe, ending up in Australia at his father's (von Sydow) research facility, where they hope to play back the recordings Hurt captured for his blind mother. 1930's Hollywood. Monroe Stahr, the production head at International World Films, is known within the business as the wonder boy for being able to present the truth and emotional core of the studio's films. He has immersed himself in his work ever since the death of movie star Mina Davis, with who he was intimately involved. His focus solely on work has resulted in his declining health. In addition to striving for perfection in the studio's movies at whatever cost, he has to babysit temperamental stars, deal with disgruntled directors and writers, the latter who in the process of not appreciating his heavy handed tactics are trying to unionize, and deal with the studio Board, chaired by his longtime associate Pat Brady, they who work solely to the bottom line of costs and revenues. While Pat's now late teen daughter Cecilia Brady, reaching her sexual awakening, chases after Monroe, who has never seen her as a sexual being, Monroe becomes infatuated with a young woman he sees off in the distance on the tour of the studio. He will learn she is Irish immigrant Kathleen Moore, his infatuation largely due to her resemblance to Mina. He will also learn that although she too is attracted to him, she leads a complex life which may not include him in her future. What happens in his pursuit of Kathleen will have an affect on his overall life.
