The plot starts with Gyan Singh, played by Jimi Mistry, is a Sikh who sets off to fight for the British Indian military group accompanied by his two best friends Avtar and Andrew. The three ride for war as Andrew's sister, Margaret, and Walter gazes upon their silhouettes. Gyan vows to protect Andrew and bring him back safely. Unfortunately, Gyan breaks that promise when Andrew is killed in action. Depressed and guilty that he could not protect Andrew, Gyan resigns from the army and starts a quiet and peaceful life. Meanwhile, a young Muslim woman named Naseem is detached from her family during protests and is oblivious to the fact that her father has been killed. Frightened and confused, Naseem hides herself in the hopes that the Sikh rioters do not locate her whereabouts. Gyan, who has just returned to his hometown proximate the borders of Pakistan, stumbles upon Naseem in the forests. Their efforts to remain unseen becomes compromised; the two are forced to negotiate for Naseem's life with money. Gyan brings Naseem to his hometown, which at first was resenting the presence of the Muslim woman. Eventually, they accept Naseem as one of their own. Together, Naseem and Gyan are able to overcome the haunting visions of their past lives. These torturing experiences ultimately unite Naseem and Gyan. They decide to marry one another. Soon after, the couple have their first child, a boy they name Vijay. Their bond appears to be unbreakable until Margaret knocks on their doorstep, bringing news that Naseem's family has been seen in Pakistan. Naseem embarks to find and see them in Pakistan. Unfortunately, her two brothers, learning of Gyan's religion, disapprove of their marriage and hold Naseem imprisoned inside her room. They forbid Naseem to ever go back to India. Gyan ventures off to rescue his wife and the mother of his son.
