The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich

At the end of his life, Wilhelm …
At the end of his life, Wilhelm Reich - psychiatrist and experimental scientist searching for the fundamentals of life - finds himself on trial, charged with deception. His dream of liberating human individuality makes him a dangerous opponent of an American system that is striving after 1945 for global hegemony, using all available means. Was it madness to believe in man's liberty or was Reich simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and, being a holistic global thinker, accurately observing far-reaching socio-political linkages? Ten years after his mysterious death, his writings, once burnt by the US FDA, become an important source of inspiration for a '68 generation in revolt.

The week of his 18th birthday, Bennie, who's a waiter on a cruise ship, has a layover in Buenos Aires. He seeks out his older brother, Tetro, whom he hasn't seen in years. Tetro, who lives with Miranda, is a burned-out case; he's hot and cold toward his brother, introducing him as a "friend," refusing to talk about their family, telling Bennie not to tell Miranda who their father is. Thoughts of their father cast a shadow over both brothers. Who is he, and what past has Tetro left behind? Bennie finds pages of Tetro's unfinished novel, and he pushes both to know his own history and to become a part of his brother's life again. What can come of Bennie's pushing?

A chronicle which charts the dramatic life story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Adolf Hitler. Bonhoeffer openly challenged his Church to stand with the Jews in their time of need, and eventually joined his family in the plots to kill Hitler. His three books, Cost of Discipleship, Letters and Papers from Prison, and Ethics, were all written during the struggle, and are considered classics in the world of religion and ethics. The film, shot on location in Germany and the United States, features interviews with family members, friends, students and associates who knew Bonhoeffer personally--including, the last interview given by Bonhoeffer's closest friend and biographer, Eberhard Bethge. As well, there is an interview with Ruth Alice von Bismarck, the sister of Bonhoeffer's fiancée, Maria von Wedemeyer.

Sydney Pollack’s multi-award winning movie, Out of Africa, …
Sydney Pollack’s multi-award winning movie, Out of Africa, is a timeless romantic drama starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford as friends and lovers. The story loosely follows the narrative set down in Danish writer Karen Dinesen’s autobiographical work of the same name. At the outset of the story we find Ms. Dinesen, played by Meryl Streep, preparing to go to Africa in order to purchase and run a dairy farm. Given that in the early 20th century this would be a difficult task, at best, to accomplish for a single woman, she becomes a baroness by agreeing to a marriage of convenience to Baron Bror Blixen; she is wealthy, and he is broke and given to dissolution. Once in Africa, Karen is disturbed to learn that Bror has bought a coffee plantation rather than the agreed-upon dairy farm. To make matters worse, he is unwilling to help in the day-to-day business of running the plantation, preferring to pursue his ambition to be a big-game hunter and a chronic philanderer. It is at this time, as she struggles to keep the plantation together, that Karen meets another big-game hunter, Denys Finch Hatton (Redford), and they fall in love. When she learns of Bror’s infidelities by way of his giving her syphilis, she asks that he leave the house, and he complies. Karen and Denys are then free to pursue their affair. There is no happily-ever-after, however, as Karen soon wants more of Denys and asks him to move in with her. To the independent, free-spirited Denys, this is tantamount to putting a leash around his neck, and he’ll have none of it, which ultimately is tragic for both. It is apparent that there is a genuine love and affection between them that is played out with the lush, stunning scenery of British East Africa as a backdrop. Out of Africa is not only the story of the sometimes difficult relationship between two people, but of the equally uneasy relationship between colonists and native peoples.
