People who had overcome some sort of adversity or faced a challenge were often featured. We, The People began on radio in 1936 and continued to be heard there; this was the first series to be simulcast on television and radio. (This simulcast situation continued through the summer of 1950.) The original host was voice-over announcer Dwight Weist before actor Dan Seymour took over the job in 1949. The information here has been gleaned from magazines and newspapers of the era, as well as the personal papers of the show's director, Preston Wood. (Those papers are part of the Belknap Collection at University of Florida in Gainesville.)

It overturns and its occupants, Tim Slade, Newspaper man turned private investigator, and Hugh Fresney, managing editor of the Los Angeles Currier, are pinned underneath. Both are seriously injured and are unable to move. As they wait for the tide to come in and cover them, Fresney recounts that his boss, Clint VAughn has been killed, presumably by gangsters in the pay of Nick Dyke, who Fresney has fought against through his newspaper columns. Slade had been hired to avenge Fresney if Dyke's gang killed him in retaliation, Slade, one-time sweetheart of Vaughn's dipsomaniac wife Julie Vaughn, believed she still loved him, but he had fallen for Dana Jons, Vaughn's beautiful secretary. Police Detective O'Haffey investigated Vaughn's death and unearthed several suspects, including Slade, Julie, Dykes and Dana, but Slade was not satisfied and looked elsewhere.

On the same night in court, Madge Carter is on trial for disorderly conduct, and Brandon volunteers to defend her, and proves the case against her if a frame-up. Finding that she is penniless, Brandon hires her as his secretary, and falls in love with her. Brandon is appointed district attorney and has ambitions of becoming the state governor. Having dinner at Betty's home, she maneuvers him, while he is drunk, into marrying her. Later, Madge is a witness when Larkin shoots down a fellow gangster. By threatening Brandon's life, he forces her to commit perjury at his trial, and say he fired in self-defense. Brandon, the prosecuting attorney (who has had his marriage to Betty annulled) knows she is lying but doesn't know why.

A couple years pass and she leaves her daughter in the care of another woman. One night Jimmy and his college pals visit the dance hall where Molly works as a hostess. Jimmy and Molly are happy to see one another and catch up on old times. Drunk and jealous, Nicky orders Molly and Jimmy into a car he has stolen. When the police spot the car, Nicky fires some shots and runs into an alley, hitting an officer before being wounded himself. Molly drives off in the car with Jimmy. With a cop dead, the entire city is on the lookout for the brunette mystery girl who drove the getaway car. Molly dyes her hair blonde and moves with Jimmy into an inconspicuous apartment to lay low. Their neighbor is Scotty Cornell, a streetwise newspaperman. Soon the police learn Molly's name and suspect her of being the brains behind Nicky's whole gang. Jimmy wants Molly to go away with him and get married, but Scotty counters with an offer to take her to Paris for some laughs. Molly is torn between her desire to at last be respectable with Jimmy and her attraction to Scotty, who may be more "her type". Meanwhile Scotty hatches a plan to catch the fugitive Ms. Louvain by broadcasting that her daughter is gravely ill. Molly turns herself in to the police in order to help her child, but finds it is only a ruse. Scotty is shocked to learn that the mystery woman he set the trap for is his own Molly. Touched by her maternal devotion, he recognizes that she is not the tramp he took her for and promises to drum up enough support in the press to keep her out of jail.
