Years have passed since …
Years have passed since Ted Striker heroically saved many lives by avoiding a plane crash. Working as a test pilot for a new Lunar Shuttle, he gets innocently sent into a mental ward after a crash of the badly constructed, computer-navigated spaceship. When he hears that the exactly same type of shuttle is scheduled for a moon flight soon, he breaks out to hinder the launch. Aboard, Ted finds his ex-ex Elaine Dickinson working as stewardess again and her fiancé Simon, a member of the committee that wants the Mayflower I to be launched. In flight, the ship's computer ROK 9000 takes control, killing the crew. Ted and Elaine manage to switch it off, and now it is up to Ted again to save the passengers' lives - if there only wouldn't be these flashbacks to the war and these people who know Ted and have no faith in his abilities at all.

Taking a break in Zambia with his assistant Milo Jackson to get in touch with his African roots, Sam believes he sees the answer to all his professional problems in the form of Nanu, arguably the fastest, strongest, and most agile person who he has ever come across, Nanu who also has pinpoint accuracy in his aim. After the death of his missionary parents, Nanu was raised as a jungle boy by Gazenga, an African witch doctor. As Nanu is reluctant to leave his African home, Sam and Milo have to manipulate a way for Nanu to want to attend Merrivale. Gazenga may have his own thoughts of what he wants for his son. Eventually, Nanu does go to Merrivale with Sam and Milo, with the one condition that he bring his best friend, Harri, who he's known since he was a child. Beyond adjusting to western life, Nanu finds that his stay at Merrivale is not always a smooth or happy one as some constituents don't want to see Nanu compete for Merrivale and as Nanu discovers the deception that brought him to Merrivale in the first place. As Nanu may come to his own conclusions of what he himself wants to do which may take into account his tutor Jane, everything in his athletic life at Merrivale may come to a head as Coach Archer has entered him into every event at an upcoming NCAA track and field meet.

Sam Smith is forced to move into the run down Flushing, New York house of his entertainment business partner Ernest Grey after they are evicted from their offices for making pornographic movies and losing all their money and equipment in the process. Ernie originally bought the house on Sam's ill-advice of the property soon being expropriated for a highway, which never happened. Further adding to the house's lack of appeal is that it is located next to a cemetery. As Ernie tries to sell the house, which is run by his devoted but exasperated housekeeper Molly Fletcher who hates Sam, he rents out rooms in it. As soon as Sam moves in, strange occurrences happen in the neighborhood, including a mutilated body being found in the cemetery, and one of their neighbors, Mrs. Potter, being attacked by a howling man. Ernie's new physician, Dr. Charles Strauss, believes that Ernie's developing symptoms, including a need to howl, points to him turning into a werewolf, which may explain the ravaged dead body and the attack on Mrs. Potter. Dr. Strauss tries to cure Ernie, while Sam thinks they should capitalize on Ernie's misfortune in some form of entertainment capacity. But others around them may know more about the strange goings-on than they let on. They include Ernie's two boarders - the violin playing Axel Kronstadt and pretty college student Robin Sherwood, to who Ernie is attracted - and the Ravenswoods, a mysterious Hungarian family that lives next door.
