After returning home from years spent in a convent, Marie Beaulieu ( Lillian Rich ), is shocked to discover that her father, the leader of a band of smugglers, desires she marry Dave Roi, one of the members of the band. Marie refuses and runs away, aided by Norman Aldrich, an American customs officer, to a small town where she is befriended by Father Leclair. Enraged by his daughter's escape, Beaulieu kidnaps Marie, but Aldrich comes to her rescue and during the struggle the smuggler is shot and killed. Aldrich is arrested for the murder until a half-witted shepherd confesses that he killed Beaulieu to avenge an old grudge. Aldrich is then elected to rid the town of the smugglers and wins Marie for his wife.

Hypnotist Norman Osgood entrances guest Harrison Kirke. during a house party at the Copeland residence. Upon waking from his trance, Kirke becomes so angry that he threatens Osgood's life. The hypnotist then secretly provides George Clayton with a suggestion to kill Kirke "one hour before dawn." The next morning, Kirke is found murdered, and Clayton recalls a terrible dream in which he had killed Kirke, leading him to fear that he committed the crime while sleeping. When the detective arrives to investigate, Clayton's fears cast suspicion upon him, but after several false leads, the detective finally unmasks the real killer, an old enemy of Kirke's, Bob Manning.

Pretty Manhattan model Marion Buckley receives a marriage proposal from Warren Rogers, a wealthy department store owner, but is reluctant to accept it because of her affair with her employer Leon Kessler, who promised to marry her. Kessler agrees to keep quiet about the affair and Marion Buckley. All goes well until one day Kessler visits the couple and proposes marriage to Rogers' teenage daughter Ardath. Knowing that her husband knows nothing of she and Kessler's history together, Marion tells him of her previous affair with Kessler, with disastrous results.
