Glamour artist Bob Randolph is world famous for his paintings of a stunning beauty dubbed "The Randolph Girl". What the world doesn't know is that his pin-up creation is really a composite of parts of the anatomy of 12 different models. In an effort to find one girl who possesses all the proper physical attributes, Randolph and PR man Chuck Donovan pursue Ruth Wilson, a beauteous schoolteacher who prefers to be admired for her brain rather than her curves. Ruth changes her tune, however, when a published photo of her in a swimsuit causes her to be fired by the uptight schoolboard. She sues for reinstatement and in the process learns that swimsuits and sex appeal do have a place in her world, after all.

A woman-hating astronomy professor, Bertram Dillsome, inherits a swank beauty salon in a New York hotel from his aunt. His New York arrival beings an unexpected fanfare of publicity arranged by Diane "Dime" Pringle, who had met and fallen in love with Bertram at a college lecture, and has convinced her father, Julius H. Pringle, to allow his press agent, sour-puss Jonathan Sweet, to handle Bertram's publicity. The beauty shop is soon deluged with clients until actress Amy Devore hits it with a fraudulent suit for infecting her face. Bertram finds a recording made by his aunt before her death that hints at mysterious happenings at the salon, involving a Mrs. Kennar. Suspecting that his aunt had been murdered, Bertram and Dime call Mrs. Kennar to the salon but, before they see her, Ann Kuo, a Chinese attendant at the salon, and Rodney Blynn, confront her and she leaps from the window to her death. Amy tells Bertram she will not press her suit if he will allow her to take over the salon but he turns her down over the objections of his attorney Middlesex. Dottie Nickerson, a trusted employee at the salon, sees Kuo steal some letters from a customer's purse and hears her telephone Blynn. Sweet has been attacked by a mysterious assailant and Dottie visits him in the hospital and tells him what she observed. He wants to visit Blynn's apartment, but Dottie hides his trousers.

Idealistic doctoral graduates Bob (Dr. Robert E. Cornish), …
Idealistic doctoral graduates Bob (Dr. Robert E. Cornish), Louise and John plan their futures in pursuit of a formula to restore life to the dead. Bob and Louise wish to remain independent and pursue medical research free of corporate ties. John tries in vain to convince them that by joining him to work at Arnold Research Laboratories they could achieve more research in a year than they could in five as an independent research team. John leaves his friends for corporate pharmacology only to find the pace of his research is not progressing fast enough nor seems practical enough to suit Mr. Arnold. The final blow comes when he is told to turn his attention to creating a treated pig bristle brush to restore hair and prop up his bosses investments in pig processing. Disillusioned Dr. John Kendrick faces public ridicule as he promotes his theory to his peers and falls into a deep depression that costs him his private medical practice. Five years later the sudden passing of his wife, drives in into a paralytic depression and loses custody of his only son, Danny. Danny runs away with his dog scooter in tow to avoid being a ward of the state and hoping to return to life with his father. Danny is befriended by an east-side gang and allowed to stay in their club house with Scooter serving as watch dog. The gang tries to help Danny get his dad a job but the best they can come up with is as an elevator operator in a research lab. When his dad turns the job down, Danny takes it as a sign that his father is unwilling to get back to a state of normalcy and regain custody. Meanwhile Louise and Bob continue their research on life after death when they learn of John's fate from his former boss at Arnold Research. Louise visits John to share the success of Dr. Bob Cornish's own research. John takes this as ridicule and drives her off with self-righteous indignation. Danny's dog scooter is captured by the dog catcher and the gang tries to spring all the dogs to cover a rescue attempt. Danny and Scooter are caught but Danny gets away only to find one of his friends has broken a leg while running from the pound. Afraid to go home to his father, the injured boy is taken to the clubhouse and Danny enlists his father to help. Dr. John is too far gone and refuses to treat the boy, leaving the gang to think Danny has lie about his father being a great doctor. Danny begins to doubt his father himself when he learns that Scooter is being gassed by the dog catcher in retaliation for the rescue attempt. Danny again implores his dad to help revive Scooter to no avail. Danny runs away again vowing he no longer wishes to see his father. Upon reflection of how he has let down himself and Danny, Dr. John collects Scooters body and enlists the help of Dr. Bob Cornish and his team to revive him. The gang brings in their dogs as blood donors to create the resuscitation fluid. The gang then find Danny on the verge of jumping out a window in despair. What follows is purported to be an actual reanimation sequence performed by the real Dr. Robert Cornish and his team*. The result restores the faith of Dr. John in science and Danny in his father. *The story opens with a signed affidavit as follows: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: The actual experiment of bringing the dead back to life, which is part of the motion picture "Life Returns" was performed by myself and staff on May 22, 1934 at 11:45 P.M. in Berkeley, California. This part of the picture was originally taken to retain a permanent scientific record of our experiment. Everything shown is absolutely real. The animal was unquestionably and actually dead, and was brought back to life. May I offer my thanks to my assistants, Mario Margutti, William Black, Ralph Celmer and Roderic Kneder, who are shown carrying out their respective parts. Respectfully submitted, Dr. Robert E. Cornish

History, as portrayed in this film, has been a succession of conquests of stronger races over weaker ones. As played out on the stage of Monument Valley, long ago, tribes of Indians defeated the ancient cliff dwellers; then came the Europeans to conquer the Indians. Now, in the early 20th Century, a tribe of Navajo live on a reservation overseen by an Indian-hating agent, Booker. He and his men steal the best Indian horses for their own profit. Nophaie, a tribal leader, complains to Booker's higher-ups, but he is unable to gain fair treatment from the whites. When World War I breaks out, an Army captain comes west in search of the horses that Booker was supposed to have bought from the Indians for a fair price. Marian Warner, the teacher at the Indian School, has befriended Nophaie, teaching him to read; she convinces him that the Great War is a fight for a more just world, and that, when that world comes, the Indian will be better treated. Nophaie not only brings horses for the Army, he and many other Indians enlist, and distinguish themselves in battle. But when they come back after the war is over, they find life for Indians even worse than when they left. Surely, they feel, it is time to fight back. But Nophaie is not so sure.

Lydia Thorne, a wealthy girl who loves speed and thrills, is unsympathetic when Evans, her maid, is jailed for stealing her jewels. District Attorney Daniel O'Bannon visits Lydia to make her see the error of her own ways, but instead views a scene of Lydia and her friends that reminds him of a Roman orgy. O'Bannon feels it is his duty, therefore, to send Lydia to jail for her own good when her automobile driving causes the death of a motorcycle policeman. Lydia is resentful, and her rebuff of O'Bannon, who has come to love her, causes him such remorse that he turns to drink and dissipation. Meanwhile, Lydia reforms, realizes she loves O'Bannon, and resolves to do charitable work. She and Evans open a soup kitchen after their release, and a chance meeting with O'Bannon starts him on the road to recovery. With Lydia's encouragement he becomes himself again, runs for governor, but withdraws his candidacy to marry Lydia when he sees that her record would be a liability to him in politics.

Wlliam deMille produced and directed Miss Lulu Bett, a film of extraordinary conviction and insight. It was then often the custom for unmarried women to lodge with family; thus we discover Miss Lulu in a boring Midwestern town, an exploited household drudge for her sister and her overbearing brother-in-law. In the course of the story (based upon the Pulitzer Prize play and novel by Zona Gale), Lulu evolves from slavery into an attractive and self-assured woman, prepared to make her own life. Revealed through wonderful performances and clever use of props, the characters are extraordinarily solid and involving.
