Its is NYC in 1928 and taxi-cab owners Tim McGuerin and Eddie Corbett are making a hard-scrabble living with the one tumbledown cab they have between them, and take shifts driving. They have plans to expand and already have their second cab in their garage, lacking only a motor. Tim, led into a burlesque theatre by a rich drunk, Reginald Van Nostrum, who has rented the cab for the day, falls in love at first sight with dancer Sadie O'Brien, who has also caught the eye of gangster Louis Glorio, and the latter is none too thrilled with Tim's courtship of Sadie. The latter though is taken also with Tim, and barely even knows that Glorio has staked a claim on her. She gives two of Glorio's henchman, Stretch and Joe the money to buy a motor for Tim and Eddie's second cab. The two, in an economy move, steal the motor from the first cab and install it in the second cab. Meanwhile, Glorio has his henchman Silk plant guns and booze in the boy's cab, while they are playing baseball, and the police are called. After several hours of intense grilling in which the "thoirty-thoid" degree grilling of Tim and Eddie does more damage to the grillers than the grillees, the police finally release them, primarily because they have discovered that a fingerprint on the planted tommy-gun belongs to a long-sought gangster known as the Frisco Ghost. Silk, despite his name, is not the smoothest nor brightest star in hoodlum circles and has planted a gun taken from (what must have been a big) drawer in Glorio's desk. Glorio is about to force Tim to aid him in escaping the fast-approaching police in his cab, which might have been a good plan if the cab had still had a motor.

In this 100% fictional film, in which not a single performer plays "Himself" nor "Herself" but the two lead performers use their own name as a character, a singer named Bonnie Baker (Bonnie Baker, with a strip-tease singing voice auditions for a job singing with orchestra of Luke Laramie (Albert Dekker)), but his taste runs to blondes and Bonnie, at the moment is a brunette. Meanwhile, Luke goes to the weight-reducing sanitarium run by Dr. Calonna (Jerry Colonna), hoping to lose some weight in order to get a spot on a radio program sponsored by the maker of a non-fattening food product. Dyeing her hair from brunette to blonde, Bonnie, a fictional character played by a singer with the same name, and her agent, "Death Valley Joe" Frink (Edward Everett Horton), follow Luke to the screwy sanitarium, run like a nightclub and a summer resort by Colonna and his lovely nurse, Miss Jones (Lillian Cornell), who primarily sings and dances. It soon gets broad when Aunt Emma (Renie Riano) shows up and turns out to be Faro Fanny, Frinks' old sweetheart from his Death Vally days.

Sunset Murder Case

First of all this film was produced and distributed in 1938, and …
First of all this film was produced and distributed in 1938, and is not a 1941 production. The exhibitors and various censor boards objected to the original title, "The Sunset Strip Case" (because of the double meaning that implied a strip on Sunset rather than the name of the street, which is exactly what the producer had in mind when he hired fan-dancer Sally Rand, the hit of the Chicago Exposition and the later Texas Centennial), and Boston promptly banned the film, as Boston was often subject to do with far less reason than they had with this film. The film was tied up in law suits across the country brought against the various blue-nose boards who also blocked its showing, and all this was going on during the collapse of Grand National with GN president E. W. Hammons being hauled to court by exhibitors and creditors, including the production unit headed by this film's producer George A. Hirliman. The latter produced it for Grand National distribution, but Grand National had no distribution left when Hirliman finally got it cleared for showing in New York in 1941 under the title of "The Sunset Murder Case"...and it was distribued through indie exchanges in 1941 as Grand National had long folded its tent. It still carried the Grand National logo, which evidently has fooled the source that keeps calling this a 1941 production, and showing it as being distributed by an entity that no longer existed. The cast order shown on the 1941 prints is no way reflective of the cast order shown on original release. Excuse the use of Plot Summary to explain why this is not a 1941 film, but that is beginning to appear to be the only way to get this film into its proper decade. The plot summary, albeit skimpy, already on site will suffice for the plot. Be advised that Sally Rand was slower with her fans and showed more flesh in a later-Soundies short film than she does here. This one ran into trouble in 1938 because of her name, and not what she actually showed, although she showed more than was custom in 1938...or 1948 or 1958 for that matter.

Lucky Carson is riding through the snow-covered mountains …
Lucky Carson is riding through the snow-covered mountains when he sees Bat Moulton and his gang chasing Jim Thornton. Since it's none of his business Lucky hides behind a boulder to avoid being involved. (Unlike most B-western heroes, those played by Hoot Gibson often not only avoided trouble that wasn't theirs, they often avoided trouble when it was directed at them.) But Thornton has doubled back and pulls a gun on Lucky with the intent of stealing Lucky's untired horse. But the frightened horse rears, dashes over a cliff and takes Thornton with him. Lucky goes through Thornton's saddle bags, finds gold in them and realizes why Moulton's men were chasing the late departed Thornton. Hiding the bags at the foot of a mountain, Lucky (on Thornton's now-rested horse) rides on and comes across a Medicine Show ran by Doc Haliday. He hooks on as a sharpshooter and meets entertainer Ann Thornton, the dead man's niece. Moulton and his men ride up and inform Ann that they have taken possession of the Bonanza Mine that was owned jointly by Ann and her late uncle. Moulton also suspects Lucky of having the gold since he has found Thornton's body but no gold. Moulton goes to Sheriff Hodges and charges Lucky with the murder and robbery of Thornton. Lucky gets thrown in a cell with a drunk named Wheeler, who is the only lawyer in town and is assigned by the court to be Lucky's defender. During the trial, while Wheeler is sleeping off his hangover, Lucky manages to implicate Moulton and his men revealing that he saw them chasing Thornton. Wheeler wakes up and believing Lucky to be guilty --- Wheeler has never had an innocent client---takes Lucky to a back room during a recess and gives him the best and only advice gained in his years of lawyering... RUN. Lucky does. Meanwhile, the coroner breaks down Moulton's testimony, and the jury finds that Thornton's death was accidental. The Judge orders Moulton and his men to cease and desist with their activities at the Bonanza Mine, and goes to tell Lucky he has been cleared. He acts somewhat surprised to find that Lucky has departed the scene, although he shouldn't have been considering he left Wheeler and his client alone in a room with a window. (Any B-western that has a court with Milburn Morante as the judge, Charles King as a defense lawyer, Horace B. Carpenter as the prosecutor and buzzard-looking Nelson McDowell as the Coroner has to be cherished. ) Meanwhile, Moulton's gang is chasing Lucky, and Ann and the Sheriff go to the mine and find Jim Thornton's diary that reveals that Moulton had held Moulton prisoner after the gold had been discovered and extracted---but did allow Thornton to keep his diary entries up to date---and they conclude that ol' Uncle Jim had managed to escape and take the gold with him. The sheriff takes off after Moulton and sees Lucky. But Lucky also sees the sheriff and thinks he is the chasee since he didn't wait around to hear the jury's verdict. Lucky takes off and manages to get himself captured by Moulton and company and they truss him up in an ore car with intentions of giving him a ride over the cliff if he doesn't fess up about where the gold is hidden. It all works out.

Quite possibly the most-recycled B-western plot in which a disgraced (by a ruse)a lawman crosses the border in order to get in with an outlaw gang and trick them back across the border where they can be legally captured and arrested. Columbia also made this RCMP version as "North of the Yukon" with Charles Starrett and again (although the Mountie stayed on the Canadian side of the border)as "Rider's of the Northwest Mounted." Most of the time the hero was a Texas Ranger going south to Mexico instead of a Mountie going south to the U.S. The wonder is that once in a while they didn't make the hero a Mexican Rurale going "north" into Texas or an American lawman going north into Canada, but 'south' seemed to be the only direction the Columbia writers could work with. In this one RCMP Tim Barry (Buck Jones, who also made two Texas Rangers versions of this one), quits the RCMP (as a ruse)to cross the border from Canada to the U.S. to avenge the death of his Mountie brother at the hands of a gang led by Conyda (Fred Kohler.) Buck seems more at home after he crosses the border, gets into his regular western costume and gunbelt, and sheds the RCMP uniform equipped with a gun with a string attached. Lona Andre, just entering her too-much-makeup-is-never-enough phase,is on hand displaying her attributes wearing a great pair of too-tight Levis.
