Claxtonbury's stenographer, Norma Wood, is engaged to George Goodie, a sanctimonious, miserly clerk, who looks forward to her continued employment after their marriage. Determined to have a fling at life, Norma walks out on Goodie and charges a number of gowns to Claxtonbury. In her finery she visits a restaurant, where she meets Oliver Morley. Oliver's sister, Mrs. Sentel, a wealthy widow whose two passions in life are her son Gregory and "the movies," hires Norma for $5,000 to lure Gregory from his portly sweetheart, a delicatessen owner's daughter. Using tips found in How to Win a Man in 48 Hours , written by a "picture vamp," Norma succeeds and Gregory proposes to her. Norma, however, realizes that she has fallen in love with Oliver and confesses all to him. Her love is reciprocated and Norma and Oliver plan to marry.

Run out of town when he exposes crooked politician Jarvis McVey in the pages of his newspaper, Burton Grant asks his daughter Sylvia to turn the Daily News over to his dynamic young city editor, Frank Summers. Having inherited her father's journalistic talents, however, Sylvia fires Frank and takes charge of the paper herself, decorating the city room with bows and printing several rather silly "scoops." In the meantime, Frank learns that McVey and the president of the railroad have become involved in a dishonest scheme concerning the city franchise, and when Sylvia hears this, she publishes an extra, stating that McVey should be tarred and feathered. Sylvia's father arrives just in time to prevent the angry townspeople from carrying out her suggestion and then compels McVey to leave town. Grant orders Sylvia to return to school, but she decides to become Mrs. Frank Summers instead.

One day, Henry Penfield, the new minister, comes to town and is attracted to Liz. On the same train as Henry is Arnold Brice, a young artist who takes a fancy to Mildred Holcombe, the prettiest girl in town and the daughter of a deacon of the church. Mildred falls in love with Arnold, but her brother Arthur threatens to kill the artist if he finds them together. Ignoring Arthur's threats, Mildred goes to the artist's studio. Liz discovers that Arthur has followed her and runs to the studio to warn them. When Arthur arrives, Liz sacrifices her honor to save Mildred and confesses that she was having an affair with Arnold. The deacons then decide to send Liz away because of her disgrace, and Henry, overhearing Liz bid goodbye to Mildred, discovers the truth. That Sunday, he tenders his resignation and announces that he is going to marry Liz.

Constance, the beautiful wife of Mark Barr, is in fear of her husband's jealousy. Among the guests at their reception are Myrtle Gale and her fiancé, Billy Craig, to whom Constance was at one time engaged. Mark misinterprets a friendly chat between the two and forbids Billy to visit his house. Myrtle goes to the city, and is to return on an early evening train, on which Constance also expects her husband. Both are delayed and Constance persuades Billy, who has come to meet Myrtle, to take her for a ride in his new car. They lose their way and are out nearly all night. Constance is beset with fear at her husband's anger. Billy takes Constance to an inn for a bite to eat and they discover it is a notorious roadhouse. On their way out of the grounds, lightning strikes a tree which falls in the road as another automobile, driven by Fletcher, cashier of the bank, approaches. Monck, watchman at the bank, learning that Fletcher has gone out, breaks open the safe and takes a large sum of money. As an alibi he takes a watch charm which belongs to Fletcher, to the police, and tells them Fletcher overpowered him and robbed the bank. Fletcher is placed in jail and sends for Billy. Mrs. Fletcher also seeks his aid. Constance goes to Billy's office and hides behind a screen as her husband enters. She sneezes but Billy will not allow Mark to look behind the screen. Constance pictures the difference in size between the watchman and the cashier. Billy places his stenographer behind the screen, sends for Monck and secures his confession. Mark comes in and finds the stenographer behind the screen and Constance's happiness is assured. Fletcher is released and Mrs. Fletcher is made happy, while Billy goes to his sweetheart who is doubly happy in the knowledge that Billy has caused justice to be done.

Henrietta Jones and her niece, Edna, also go to Sea Hurst for their vacation, occupying the tent adjoining Jack and Joe. The Widow Millionbucks arrives at Sea Hurst. Joe and Edna fall in love with each other. Henrietta falls in love with Jack, who meets the Widow Millionbucks. She is pursued by several suitors, but Jack wins her affections. While Henrietta is sleeping, Joe secures a marriage license for Edna and himself, Henrietta being opposed to his suit. That night Henrietta, being frightened at a rat, runs from her tent and throws herself into Jack's arms, he being attracted by her screams, rushed out in his pajamas. Sid, the owner of the tents, appears and demands the reason of the unusual situation. Henrietta announces that she and Jack are to be married. Jack is horrified as Sid speaks of arresting him. Sid sends for a preacher, and Jack flees to the beach in a wild attempt to escape, the others following. Jack eludes his pursuers in the water. At her demise, she wakes from her nightmare, joyful to find the drug untouched, and rushes to tell her husband about her impending motherhood.

To make her social debut, Phyllis leaves her hometown of Carthage and accepts the invitation of Mrs. Fenshaw, a Washington social matron, to live with her. Phyllis soon tires of the stuffy life and boring suitors and returns. At a matinee road-show performance, Phyllis becomes infatuated with actor Cyril Adair. When she invites him for tea, the vain actor accepts, hoping to seduce her. After more meetings, Cyril's discarded lover informs Ladd, who demands that the romance cease. Phyllis elopes with Cyril, who, touched by her devotion, marries her. Although their life is plagued by Cyril's alcoholism, firings and inability to get new roles because Ladd influences theater managers to reject him, Phyllis patiently tries to bring out the best in her husband.
