Sunset Park is a dramatic basketball film. It was written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and Kathleen McGhee-Anderson. Directed by Steve Gomer, the movie was produced by Danny DeVito. The story follows P.E. teacher Phyllis Saroka (played by Rhea Perlman) in New York City. After becoming aware of an opportunity to coach a basketball tram at Sunset Park High School, she decides to apply for the job. She knows nothing about basketball but, through her contacts, lands the job. When she arrives, the team is skeptical. One player indicates that they will probably lose every game. She lets players run the team, calling their own shots, plays and fouls. She makes some bad calls during the game, and some of the players are irked. Phyllis is then inspired to learn more about the game. Through the players, she finds a way to guide the team toward success. Also, outside situations pose a threat to the team. Shorty Doo-Wop, Tyrik Russell (played by Fredo Starr), gets into more trouble while on probation. Also, Spaceman (played by Terence Howard) is using drugs while on probation and gets into trouble with other teachers. Busy-bee (played by De'aundre Bonds) suffers from a gun shot in the middle of the season, causing him to miss many games. Many of the players are also not doing well academically. Many of the guys don't get along with each other very well. When they find out that their new coach will only be around for one season and then start a restaurant, this does nothing to inspire them. Eventually, the team manages to come together in spite of all of their troubles and differences. After a successful season, they enter the city championship. At Madison Square Garden, they face opponents and lose only by a very small margin. At this point, Phyllis has a change of heart and lets them know that next season she will return.
