Egypt, thousands of years ago: Pharaoh Seti (Sir Patrick Stewart) commands all male Hebrew babies to be drowned. A desperate mother places her son in a basket and lets the Hebrew God guide him along his way on the river. The basket is found by the Queen (Dame Helen Mirren), and Moses is brought up as a brother to the heir of the throne, Rameses II (Ralph Fiennes). Years later, the brothers, who grew up happily and wealthy, are split by Moses' recognition of his true heritage and the suppressing system his brother is about to inherit, willing to carry it on. Fleeing from the city in despair, Moses (Val Kilmer) finds himself being called by God. He is given the task of being the messenger in order to free the Hebrews and to lead them into the land of milk and honey.

Kirya (an ancient Hebrew nickname for Jerusalem) was Ofra Haza's 1992 follow-up to the internationally successful Shaday (1988) and Desert Wind (1989). Building on her successful blend of European pop and traditional Middle Eastern sounds, the album was a logical next step for Haza. Musically, it applied the sensibilities of pop producer Don Was to traditional song writing and instrumentation; lyrically, it delivered powerful themes of longing, joy, and the plight of the downtrodden in several languages, much like Haza's earlier work.

Desert Wind is a 1989 album by Ofra Haza, who was one of the most popular singers in Israel at the time. Haza was unknown in the rest of the world until the previous year when the song "Im Nin'Alu" and the following album Shaday were released, bringing her to the attention of Europe and the United States. Desert Wind was therefore more oriented toward the international market.

Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The world's longest running weekly music show, TOTP was shown every Thursday evening on BBC One, except for a short period on Fridays in mid-1973, and again in autumn 1974, before once again being moved to Fridays at 7:30 pm from 1996 to 2005 and then to Sundays on BBC Two from 2005 till the last ever weekly show in 2006. Each weekly show consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, changing to the Top 30 during the 1970s and the Top 40 in the 80s. The distinctive TOTP theme tune – a riff of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" – first appeared in 1973 as the background music to the chart countdown.
