Unable to solve his last case, …
Unable to solve his last case, famed private detective Lance O'Leary is showing signs of being on the verge of a nervous breakdown. As such, he is admitted to the private Thatcher Institute to recuperate. Beyond the inability to rest and relax as he is ordered, O'Leary doesn't totally mind being there as it allows him to spend time with the head nurse, Sara Keate, with who he is in an on-again/off-again relationship, those switches largely pressed by her. Besides O'Leary's butler Seymour Bentley being a known ex-con, there is much going on at the Institute of intrigue: the only other patient is is elderly and wealthy Institute benefactor Frank Warren, who head doctor Arthur Lethany convinced to go through a $100,000 medical radium treatment for his ailment; Dr. Balman, who once had money but is now broke, is incensed by the treatment as he feels it is both unnecessary for Warren and would better serve a multitude of other patients who would truly benefit from it; Lethany's wife, Carol Lethany, is in a clandestine relationship with the Institute's poor intern, Dr. Fred Harker, who she would leave her husband for if Harker only had money; Lethany himself lusts after another one of the nurses, Maida Day; Warren's nephew, Jim Warren, is deep in debt, something that his uncle refuses to help him pay; and Jim and Maida themselves are in a relationship. Within these situations, two of these people are murdered at the Institute and the $100,000 worth of radium stolen, all the other players who would have opportunity and/or motive to kill one or both victims. Thus, O'Leary changes from being patient back to private investigator, and despite she a a suspect herself, Sara is by his side in the investigation. Things are only complicated as O'Leary and the police detective in charge of the case, Inspector Foley, have a friendly rivalry. The case takes a turn when some discover that the Institute's nightwatchman, Higgins, actually saw the murder.

Blinded by love, he gave an engagement ring to his girlfriend of one month Mamie, and despite she knowing it was only on loan and not yet paid for since Chris did not yet have the money, she promptly ran off with another man and the ring. Maurice Bayleck, the disreputable money lender from who Chris got the ring, will not extend payment to him. Chris was banking on a raise and/or promotion after a year on the job, but Stevens, a spendthrift, denies both on the basis of what he considers the company's tight finances which are solely in his penny-pinching mind. Chris' financial issues take a turn when he finds Bayleck shot to death, he coming face to face with the woman who shot him, she who implies she too was facing the same financial issue in Bayleck putting the squeeze on her. Not knowing what to do between the morally right thing versus not wanting to expose his own debt to Bayleck and not knowing the woman or her story, Chris decides not to go to the police about her. Chris is shocked when he next comes face to face with the woman and discovers she is Doris Stevens, the boss' wife. In the ensuing uncomfortable relationship Chris ends up having with Mrs. Stevens, he begins a burgeoning romance with Molly Hobbes, the proprietress of a home furnishing store and interior design business that Stevens often uses, she who may be a positive influence on Chris in doing the right thing. What they are unaware of is that Mrs. Stevens, who hates her husband in their differences - she a former show girl and a party girl who expected Stevens to provide her an exciting life, which has not been the case - has nefarious plans for her husband so that she can have her cake and eat it too.
