From techno-pop stardom to …
From techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer, the evolution of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music has coincided with his life journeys. Following Fukushima, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan's social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returns to music following a cancer diagnosis, his haunting awareness of life crises leads to a resounding new masterpiece. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA is an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man.

async is the nineteenth solo studio album of Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and his first one in eight years since Out of Noise (2009). It's also his first full-length solo record since recovering from throat cancer in 2015. Consisting of a combination of bizarre interpretations of familiar musical instruments, unusual textures both acoustic and electronically-made, samples of recordings of people such as David Sylvian and Paul Bowles doing readings, and everyday sounds borrowed from field recordings of city streets, async has underlying themes of the worries of the end of life and the interaction of differing viewpoints in humanity.

A sweeping biopic based on the life of the last Chinese Emperor, Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi. Told mainly in flashback after Pu Yi (John Lone) becomes a prisoner of the newly established People's Republic of China, the movie tells the story of his troubled reign starting as a two year old child. Appointed Emperor in 1908 by the Empress Dowager Cixi (Lisa Lu) when he was still a toddler, Pu Yi grows up isolated from his family . As the outside world goes through political upheavals Pu Yi remains a virtual prisoner within the Forbidden City. He is kept ignorant and frequently used as a pawn by several conflicting factions jockeying for power. Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, the movie has the rare distinction of having obtained permission from the Chinese government to film on location within the Forbidden City, a first for a Western production. It went on to win nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
