Pat Clancy was perfectly …
Pat Clancy was perfectly contented with his life until a singular occurrence took place at the quarry in which he worked. Just after a blast had been set off, a strange, white-bearded little man arose out of the smoke and dust. He told Pat that he had been imprisoned in the rock for a million years, and offered to grant any wish he might make, as a reward for having released him. Pat, stunned with joy, wished that he might be a millionaire. The strange figure waved its arms and vanished. At the beginning of the glorious period of prosperity, Pat rolled down to a mahogany-lined office in a princely limousine to the utter amazement of his friends and neighbors. At the office, he found that a rich man's labors, although different, are no less arduous than those of a day laborer. Importunate stenographers, anxious clerks, and a constantly ringing telephone served to throw Pat into a state bordering on nervous prostration. At last, he seized a fire extinguisher as the only solution, and drove the entire force out of the office. Nor was his experience at dinner with his wife and her new fashionable friends any more restful. Fop Pat was unversed in the devious ways of salad, and oyster forks, and, moreover, his shoes were far too tight. To relieve the latter source of anguish, he took off the uncomfortable shoes. The inevitable discovery of his action did not make matters more comfortable either for Pat or his wife. An attempt on the part of his new friends to initiate Pat in the mysteries of the ancient game of golf proved the final straw. Pat's shoes still hurt him, and, "Begorra, he could not hit the little white pill wid th' funny lookin' stick at all." Utterly tired and disillusioned, he went down to the seashore with the intention of ending his troubles forever. Just as he was about to throw himself in the water, the Earth Gnome appeared and restrained him. Pat prayed that he and his family might be restored to their former blissful state of poverty. The gnome consented, and we leave Pat happy and contented in his old surroundings devouring an appetizing mess of corned beef and cabbage.

Tom is a boisterous boy who brings his playground manners into his mother's parlor. His mother knowing that he is a gentleman at heart, tries to improve his behavior generally, more by suggestion and example than by reproving him and her efforts eventually meet with success. She reads to him of the Knights of the Round Table, of Sir Galahad and the Holy Grail, and fills him with an idea of chivalry, gallantry and courtesy. She buys him a suit of toy armor and a sword and draws up rules of truth and honor for him to sign. The boy filled with enthusiasm selects for his special favors a little, spoiled girl who does not understand. Of all acts of gallantry, one of Sir Walter Raleigh appeals most to him. He takes advantage of an opportunity and spreads his coat for Ethel to tread upon. She laughs at him, stamps upon the coat and makes faces at him. Later he is very much discouraged and although he rescues her from the consequences of her own fault she denounces him as being the one to blame. He is in disgrace and his armor and his knighthood are taken away from him. All that his mother has told him of the reward for strict rectitude must be true because it was his mother who told him, but his faith has received a severe shock and is in danger of being lost altogether; but the spoiled girl in her childish way begins to understand and she decides to tell the truth. Tom gets back his honors and his knighthood and the seed so lovingly and carefully sown by the mother begins to take root and gives promise of bearing fruit. A foreigner who does not understand the ways of this …
A foreigner who does not understand the ways of this country, applies for work at a mill, but is sent away with the intimation that if has a child at home there will be work for it, but none for himself. We then travel in vision to New York to the home of a wealthy mill owner, to whom an appeal is being made to use his influence against child labor. He indicates that he can do nothing about it, and resents the insinuation that his own child might be one of the unfortunate except for her birth and his protection. His wife shows her interest in the project. We turn to the mill again and find that the foreigner, pushed by his poverty and unable get work himself, finally yields and puts his daughter to work, as the family must have bread. The next thing we see is that Hanscomb, the rich mill owner, has sent his wife and child on a journey, and the little one, getting off the train in a spirit of mischief, is left behind in a small town, which happens to be the same one in which the foreigner, aforementioned, and his family live. The child is found by them, and as they cannot understand each other, his kindly wife takes her home and shares her poor cottage with her. Of course Hanscomb and his wife are frantic and put detectives to work on the case, but without success. Meanwhile things go badly with the foreigner, and he feels that it is necessary to put the stranger to work with his own child. Hanscomb buys the mill and so unconsciously becomes the employer of his own child. Going to look over the new property, he enters the mill just as his own child has fainted and is cared for by her little companion, and so he misses her. She is carried past her own mother at the gate, and Mrs. Hanscomb, touched by the incident, though not knowing, of course, who the strange child is, gets her address and in the evening is there with the footman with a basket of food for the little sufferer. Of course there is a reunion. Mr. Hanscomb is sent for and finds that his little daughter has learned a lesson that he has not as yet. She refuses to be taken away by herself and insists that all the other little children be set free from their slavery. He is unable to refuse her request and the film story closes with the better conditions put into effect, though we are reminded at the end that the condition called "Child Labor" still exists and demands our attention.

Uncle Hiram is the oldest resident of the village, and has appointed himself public censor. To this end he institutes the "skunk list," to which he adds from day to day the names of those who trespass beyond his ideas of the lines of proper decorum. One day Jimmie Long is playing marbles, when a boy considerably older attempts to take them from him. Jimmie resents this and in the fight that follows, he lays his opponent low by striking him with a club. Uncle Hiram seeing this, though not knowing the cause, puts Jimmie on the skunk list as a coward. All pleas are in vain, and when his sweetheart scorns him, Jimmie is heartbroken. He can't eat and at night his bed is surrounded by goblins who jeer at him in fiendish glee for being a coward. Jimmie resolves to redeem his good name and to this end proceeds to lick most of the boys in the village. But Uncle Hiram refuses to erase his name. Jimmie rescues a puppy, which a man is about to drown. Again Uncle Hiram refuses. Finally Jimmie is passing Jones' barn, when some boys rush out, telling him the barn is on fire, and that one of their number was unable to escape. Jimmie goes into the burning barn, finds the boy, but is unable to drag him out and is also overcome. He is rescued in the nick of time and carried home, seriously burned. Through all his pain he has but one thought, he must see Uncle Hiram. Uncle Hiram is brought from the fire, where he is directing the volunteer department, to Jimmie's bedside, and Jimmie repeats his plea to have his name erased. This time Uncle Hiram relents and not only takes Jimmie's name from the skunk list, but adds it to the list of heroes, such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
