Jane and Katharine are the sweetest youngsters in the world, in their mother's eyes. The family is summering at a seaside resort when mama is called to town for a week. Not wishing to interrupt her darling's good time, she has her young bachelor brother come to the hotel to take care of the children until she returns. "Billy" Parke undertakes the job. On the way to the resort he meets Betty Murray. It is a case of love at first sight. Betty and he are bound for the same hotel. Billy would have enjoyed the bus ride from the station to the hotel with Betty if his nieces hadn't entered, recognized him and made themselves at home on his lap after being drenched when they drove an electric wheel chair into the surf. He has to neglect Betty on reaching the hotel to get the youngsters dry clothing and clean them up. Soon after her arrival at the hotel Betty and her father enter the dining room at the same time Billy and Katherine appear. Katherine had previously met Mr. Murray and introduces Uncle Billy to Mr. Murray and Betty. They are mating when Jane, who had been left in her room asleep, appears in an exceedingly brief costume on the trail of something to eat. Billy grabs her and bundles her back upstairs. Jane and Katherine keep the hotel in a turmoil. Every time Billy tries to advance his suit for Betty is an opportunity for a new escapade by the youngsters. On one of her trips about the resort Katherine comes upon Bob Murray, the son of Mr. Murray, who had been cast out by his father for forging a check. Bob is in a bad way when Katherine finds him. The little girl's motherly attentions awake the deadened manliness in him, and Bob promises her to go straight and get his father's forgiveness. Meantime Mr. Murray confides in Katherine his great sorrow. Katherine asks him why he doesn't ask his prodigal son to return, to which the elderly man replies, that he would if he could find the boy. Katherine promises to help him. A few nights later two crooks with whom Bob was connected plan to rob the Murray apartment in the hotel. Bob, though not knowing his pals were planning to rob his father, tries to quit the job, but is finally prevailed upon to undertake it. The first thing the boy's flashlight hits on entering the apartment is a picture of his dead mother. He refuses to go farther and telephones to the hotel desk asking for help just as one of the crooks fells him. The thieves flee from the room just as Mr. Murray enters and finds his son. They take refuge in Jane's room. Recognizing the men as crooks she slips from bed and hides in a bureau drawer. Uncle Billy enters, grapples with the men and is being overcome when Jane hits one of the robbers on the head with an iron. Billy soon quiets the other. The racket attracts Mr. Murray and hotel attendants, who arrest the crooks. After the excitement subsides Mr. Murray embraces his son and restores him to his estate. Billy and Betty withdraw and decide there is no blessedness in being single, and Jane and Katherine watch with mingled pleasure and surprise the outcome of the events in which they were small but important factors.

The Grand Duke Alexis has been happy with his wife, Lola, formerly the queen of the St. Petersburg ballet, and their baby daughter, Vasta. But the lowering cloud that has always hung over them through the refusal of the Russian Court to recognize their marriage breaks when the Duke learns there is an intrigue against his wife's life. She makes her escape at midnight and, powerless to do anything, Alexis is forced to see his wife pass out of his life. The baby is given to Marta Antonovitch, in charge of the girls at the Imperial Ballet School. Years later Vasta is the most apt pupil at the school. Her father comes to see her often and is deeply affected by her resemblance to her mother. The relationship is kept secret, but when he is ordered to the south for his health he gives last instructions that she be well cared for. Michael Pavloff, the impresario for the Russian Ballet, who has discovered the duke's secret, goes to the school to choose the dancers to be sent by the government to Paris. He takes a liking to Vasta, but Marta refuses to allow the girl to go when he chooses her for deportation. The girl frets over the refusal, disguises herself as a boy and changes places with a youth who had not wanted to go. In Paris Lola, despite the sorrow of the changing years, holds sway over men's hearts. Pavloff is an ardent admirer of hers, but lately he has been thinking more of Vasta. Richard Moraino, a young artist commissioned to paint the portraits of the Russian Ballet, is attracted by Vasta. Their courtship progresses and one afternoon while they are having tea together, Lola and Pavloff are seated at the next table. Both women feel an interest in the other and Lola is startled when Pavloff tells her he has discovered she is the daughter of the Grand Duke Alexis and that he intends to get her for his own. One night during the performance the electrician is killed and the stage darkened. When the lights are turned on again they discover Vasta has disappeared. Pavloff has taken the girl and locks her in his apartment. To divert suspicion he gives a dinner party. During the revelry Lola, who is a member of the party hears a half-smothered cry and, guided by it cornea to the locked door behind which Vasta is concealed. She stays until the last guest has departed and then appeals to the liquor-dazed Pavloff, She secures the key to the room and hurries back, cautioning Vasta to make haste, but Pavloff comes upon them and seizes Vasta in his arms. Lola then shoots him. Then Lola reveals her identity. Alexis, who is passing through Paris, stops to see Pavloff. He discovers Lola and the dead man and accuses her of having been his mistress, but when Vasta comes forward and tells all, Alexis begs her forgiveness. He says he will take the responsibility of the killing knowing he will be vindicated when he says it was to save the honor of his wife. Richard and Vasta are once more brought together and Alexis asks his wife if she is willing to brave the Russian Court with him after all these years. Her happy smile is sufficient answer.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the tramp enters a saloon by the side entrance. The bartender is about to put him out when he produces a coin, and calls for a drink. Presently a reporter enters and sits down at the same table with the tramp. The reporter, realizing that the tramp may provide him with interesting copy, shoves the bottle toward him. The tramp, as he drains his glass remarks, "Because she was untrue to me, I killed the woman I loved." The tramp tells the following: The tramp, stylishly dressed, is seen in a handsomely furnished room, bidding his wife good-bye. He turns to his friend, as he does this, and says to him: "Take good care of her, Tom, while I am away." Later we see the tramp returning unexpectedly, and is astonished to see Tom and his wife clasped in each other's arms. Enraged, he kills both. He then takes his grip and leaves the house. He enters a pretentious corner saloon, where he is greeted by his friends who drag him to a table, and as they drink to his health, he says, "I am on my way home. Just got in." The newsboy enters with evening papers. One of the men buys a paper from the newsboy, and shows the tramp an article headed: "Tom Blake and Mrs. Howard, wife of Henry Howard, found dead by maid. Mr. Howard has been out of town for several days." The tramp reads the article with simulated horror, and then sinks back in his chair, as if utterly overcome by an unexpected tragedy. The scene now dissolves, and we again see the tramp telling his story to the reporter and bartender. As he finishes the account of his domestic tragedy, he remarks, "It was a perfect alibi. I trust I have entertained you gentlemen." Then he staggers out into the rain. The tramp goes to meet his associates in a cheap tenement house. He tells them of his recent experience, and from the substantial evidence of his return to affluence, his associates gather that his improvised domestic tragedy has given him the opportunity to exercise his professional skill, as he is now the owner of a gold watch, and displays money that he could never earn by honest toil.
