Passion Play is the tenth album by Teena Marie, released in 1994. Marie had parted company with Epic Records following disappointing sales of her 1990 album Ivory, and Passion Play was released on her own independent label, Sarai. Without the backing of a major label, the album received only limited distribution, sold modestly and failed to chart, despite being highly regarded by Marie's hardcore fans. The CD has long been out of print and is one of the most sought-after items in Marie's catalogue.

Ivory is the ninth album by Teena Marie, released in 1990. It was her last album for Epic Records and was a commercial failure, only reaching #27 on the US Black Albums chart and #132 on the Billboard Albums chart. Marie's use of hip hop elements on some tracks was considered jarring by many fans and critics. Two singles from the album, "If I Were a Bell" and "Here's Looking at You", performed respectably on the Black Singles chart, peaking at #8 and #11 respectively. The track "Since Day One" was produced and co-written by Jazzie B of British group Soul II Soul and reached #69 in the UK, Marie's highest charting single in that country since "I Need Your Lovin'" ten years previously.

Emerald City is the seventh album by Teena Marie, released in 1986. It is a stylistic departure for her, with strong blues and jazz influences favored over her established soul/funk style, and is a concept album. This proved puzzling for fans and critics, and the album sold poorly, peaking at #20 on the US Black Albums chart and #81 on the Billboard Albums chart. Two singles, "Lips to Find You" and "Love Me Down Easy", were released. They reached #28 and #76 respectively on the Black Singles chart, but neither charted on the Billboard Hot 100. However, "Shangri-La", while it never became a single or charted anywhere, became a staple of quiet-storm programming blocks on adult R&B radio.

Starchild is the sixth album by Teena Marie, released in 1984. Following the relative commercial failure (in U.S. Pop Chart terms: The album peaked at #119 on the Pop chart; however, it reached #13 on the R&B chart compared to Starchild reaching #9.) of her previous album, Robbery, Starchild became the highest-selling album of Marie's career. It peaked at #9 on the US Black Albums chart and #31 on the Billboard Albums chart. Lead single "Lovergirl" became a major hit, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Marie's only top 30 hit on that chart). The track "My Dear Mr. Gaye" is a tribute to Marvin Gaye, who had been fatally shot and killed by his father on April 1, 1984. It was re-released by SoulMusic Records in 2012 as an Expanded Edition, containing 5 mixes as bonus tracks (see track listing below).

Robbery is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Teena Marie, released in 1983. It is her first album for Epic Records, following her acrimonious departure from Motown the previous year. The album was written and produced by Marie herself and features contributions from Patrice Rushen, Paulinho da Costa, and Steve Ferrone among others. However, the album did not repeat the success of her last Motown release It Must Be Magic (1981) stalling at number 13 on the Black Albums chart and only reaching number 119 on the Billboard Albums chart.
