Gaston, nicknamed Pilou, has left his native village and Yvette, …
Gaston, nicknamed Pilou, has left his native village and Yvette, the girl of his heart, to go to Paris where he has found work as a painter. He is a naive good-natured man who, like most of his fellow-workers, favors a little song or two while he works. For the time being he is busy repainting the exterior of a block of flats and, when he does not sing to pass the time, he looks through the windows, observing the tenants in their daily lives. As time goes by, he goes as far as intervening and changing the course of their lives. In the end, despite having found a lookalike of his fiancée, he returns to her.

The mystery of the drama is the appearance of the finger-print of a dead artist upon the neck of Princess Sonia Danidoff, whom Fantomas, as Nanteuil, relieves of her pearl necklace, and again on the body of Thomery, a merchant also done to death by the arch villain. Fandor, in the pursuit of his railing, has endeavored to solve the mysteries of these crimes, and eventually recognizes Cranajour, an idiot in the employ of Mother Toulouch, a receiver of stolen goods, as inspector Juve, of the Criminal Investigation Department. They consult together and decide that Nanteuil, the banker, should be called upon. Already suspicious, when Juve finds a glove of skin upon his hand, suspicion becomes certainty, but before they are able to secure the villain, he backs through an unsuspected door in the wall of the room and once again escapes.

Princess Sonia Danidoff is …
Princess Sonia Danidoff is staying at the Royal Palace Hotel, Paris, and withdraws $20,000 from the cashier's custody, placing the notes in a drawer in company with her magnificent rope of pearls. A few moments after a well-dressed stranger steps from behind the curtains and, with the coolest of sangfroid, steals the valuables in the very presence of the princess, and with a polite bow hands her his card and makes a dignified exit. Upon the card the name "Fantomas" slowly appears. The police are quickly upon the scene, but Fantomas, true to his nom de plume, has vanished. Inspector Robert Juve is the sleuth entrusted to track the mysterious marauder. But before Juve has time to move in the matter of the princess's jewels and cash, another escapade of Fantomas' is thrust upon him to investigate. Lord Beltham is missing. Juve calls on Lady Beltham, and in a man's hat finds the initial "G." With so slight a clue Juve tracks down "Gurn" (none other than the elusive Fantomas) to his lodgings and makes the ghastly discovery of Lord Beltham's dead body in one of "Gurn's" traveling trunks, and a packet of the special Fantomas cards establishes the connection between "Gurn" and Fantomas; they are one and the same man. Three months elapse. "Gurn" has been tried and condemned to die by the guillotine. Lady Beltham's name has not yet appeared in connection with the case, and the story goes that the murder was the outcome of a violent quarrel between "Gurn" and Beltham, yet she is enamored of the gentlemanly scoundrel and sets about seeking a method of escape for him. By means of liberal bribes, the aid of Warden Nibet is enlisted and he arranges an interview between the condemned man and Lady Beltham in a house overlooking the prison. That night a new play has been produced by a famous actor, Valgrand, who, acting the role of a condemned felon, adds a realistic touch by making up exactly to resemble "Gurn." At Lady Beltham's invitation, Valgrand, still made up as "Gurn," visits her at 2 A.M., and partaking of drugged coffee, is rendered incapable of action. Warden Nibet returns and takes back his prisoner, no longer "Gurn," alias Fantomas, but the unfortunate Valgrand, who goes through all the terrible preliminaries of a criminal's execution, aye, even to the point of being led to the guillotine, before inspector Juve makes the startling discovery that Fantomas has once more eluded him. Henceforth it is to be a fight between a clever, scheming, mysterious rogue on one hand, and inspector Juve, Chief of the Detective Dept. of Paris, on the other.

Nanine, the Artist's Wife

Nanine and Yolande are two …
Nanine and Yolande are two quaint, charming peasant girls of Middle France. Often have they heard of the large city of Paris, but never have they seen or tasted of its pleasures. They are entirely contented with their lot, however and never expect to get much further than their parental dwelling, until one afternoon, when the two girls, in company of two young peasant admirers, while frolicking over the fields, intrude upon the privacy of Maurice Crosby, the noted French artist. Crosby becomes fascinated with Nanine. He pays Nanine a visit, only to be reprimanded by her father. Excusing himself for the intrusion, the artist takes his departure, only after leaving his address with the young peasantess, and assuring her that he would want to be the first one to give her assistance any time she might be in need of same. An opportunity for calling upon Maurice was soon granted through an accident which befell the girl's father. Nanine writes him of her plight. The artist sends back hasty word for her to come on to him where she can find honest work. Nanine and Yolande leave for Paris in all their peasant finery, and arrive at their benefactor's studio. Crosby, however, is able to make good use of them, and is even inspired by their presence. The preference that he seems to pay to Nanine soon arouses the jealousy of Yolande, who quarrels with her sister and makes her feel so uncomfortable that she decides to return home. As she leaves the door to start her homeward journey, Maurice intercepts her, and refusing to listen to her reason for going home, pledges her his love, with the result that they are married. Thus is the dainty little Nanine properly rewarded.
