The Coit Tower, otherwise called the Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a 64 m tall tower located on the Pioneer Park, Telegraph Hill. It was built in 1933 in honor of Lillie Hitchcock Coits, who died in 1929, an eccentric, trendsetter and a diehard San Francisco lover. She was wearing trousers long before it was acceptable for women to do so. She played a prominent role in developing San Fransico’s firefighting efforts. Upon her death, she bequeathed a third of her fortune to the city, to be used to beautify it. The tower is a highly popular attraction and as such there’s often a long traffic line for access. The rotunda at the top, from where one can catch beautiful views of the city, is free to visitors and covered in beautiful Murals.
