Superb Views of the Area
One of New Jersey's most popular natural areas is the 16,091-acre High Point State Park. Accessible via more than 50 miles of well-maintained trails, including the popular Appalachian Trail, the park's prime attraction is High Point Monument. Constructed in 1930 to commemorate US involvement in WWI, this 220-foot tower, made from local granite and quartz, offers superb views of the surrounding area as far as the Catskill Mountains. Recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and camping are available.

The view from High Point Monument, at 1,803 feet above sea level, is a spectacular panorama of rich farmland and forest, soft hills and lush valleys in three states. The blue line of the Delaware River divides the verdant ridges of New Jersey from those of Pennsylvania. High Point offers superb trails for hikers and skiers and quiet spots for campers and anglers. The land for High Point State Park, donated by Colonel Anthony R. and Susie Dryden Kuser, was dedicated as a park in 1923. The pleasant landscaping was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Boston, a prominent landscape architectural firm of that time. The brothers were the sons of the eminent Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park.

The Shawangunk Ridge Trail starts in High Point State Park, New Jersey, at the High Point Monument. Walk to the northern end of the parking lot of the monument. There is a trail at the end of the lot called the Monument Trail. The SRT shares this trail for a mile and offers the best views of this section. After descending a very steep section, make a sharp left onto the Cedar Swamp Trail. The SRT crosses the swamp on some well made wood plank walkways. Once through the swamp, turn left at the trail junction and then take an immediate right. After 1 mile, the SRT leaves High Point State Park and crosses into New York and onto private property. The trail is not maintained in this section, and it is rocky and difficult to find. The trail continues in this section for 1.5 miles until you reach Greenville Turnpike. Turn right on this road and walk 0.4 miles to a small parking area on the left to find your shuttle vehicle if you are hiking this as a one-way trek.
