An Interesting Botanical Attraction
Though officially called the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, most Milwaukeeans refer to this interesting botanical attraction as simply "the Domes." A popular place for weddings, events, and a great stop for out-of-towners, the Domes are a fun, peaceful place to spend an afternoon. Three Glass Domes
The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, fondly known to locals as ‘the Domes’, is a set of three glass domes located in a park in the city of Milwaukee. The domes were constructed in the 1950s and 60s and today each has a theme. There is the Show Dome, the Tropical Dome, and the Desert Dome. The Show Dome has a seasonal rotation of garden shows, while the Tropical Dome is home to over 1,000 plant species that thrive in tropical weather, including a number of fruit trees. As expected, the Desert Dome is full of plants that love dry climates, with most of the species coming from Africa and the Americas.

Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory - The Domes is a conservatory owned and operated by the Milwaukee County Park System. Designed by Donald L. Grieb Associates, Architect, the Conservatory is composed of three beehive-shaped glass domes that span 140 feet in diameter and are 85 feet high. They are properly referred to as the world's first conoidal domes. They cover 45,000 square feet of display area and were constructed in stages from 1959 to 1967. Locally, they are commonly called the "three-breasted lady".

Close-To-Nature Design
Originally built in the ‘Greenhouse’ layout to accommodate a variety of flowers, the place was demolished in 1955. Soon the conservatory was reconstructed with the design layout made by Donald Grieb. The design has three Domes which embrace the green pastures of the area. The place showcases the Desert, Tropicana and Floral domes and is loved by locals and tourists for its close-to-nature design. The original conservatory in Mitchell Park was found to be unsafe in 1955 and was demolished. Donald Grieb won the design competition for a new conservatory and the construction of the 140 by 85 foot domes began in 1959.
