An international cultural and educational center and museum, the Muhammad Ali Center opened to the public November 21, 2005. Visitors to the Ali Center are able to explore the journey of the famed boxer's life and his legacy through interactive exhibits and educational programming representing the core values of respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, giving and spirituality.The Ali Center is open Tuesday through Sunday. Although it is closed on most Mondays, the Center is open on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day. It is closed Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. On Kentucky Derby Day, the first Saturday in May, the Center closes early.

Muhammad Ali is one of Louisville's most prodigious sons, and this stunning multipurpose facility devoted to the boxing great promotes his ethos and six core principles of "Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality." The building also provides event space and it offers guests an opportunity to relive the life and times of the man who was born as Cassius Clay. Some exhibits include a movie, a number of interactive video displays, and educational programs on how to become involved in social justice projects within the community.

The Muhammad Ali Center, a museum and cultural center built as a tribute to the champion athlete and his values, is located in Louisville, Kentucky's "Museum Row" in the West Main District of downtown. The six-story, 96,750 sq ft. museum opened on November 19, 2005 at a cost of $80 million. It also includes a 40,000 sq ft. two-level amphitheater and plaza, to be connected to the Louisville Museum Plaza upon its construction. The cultural center features exhibitions regarding Muhammad Ali's core values on respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, charity, and spirituality. An orientation theater helps present Ali's life from birth to the present. A mock-boxing ring is recreated based on his Deer Lake Training Camp. A two-level pavilion, housed within a large elliptical room, features Ali's boxing memorabilia and history. A large projector displays 'The Greatest', his signature fight, onto a full-sized boxing ring. There are also pods where one can view Ali's greatest fights on video-on-demand terminals that feature pre- and post-fight interviews.

Who hasn't heard of Muhammad Ali? Known early in his career by his real name, Cassius Clay, he's considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. He later converted to Islam. Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and it's here in his hometown where they've built a museum in his memory. It's intended to honor his career and its highlights, but if functions primarily as a cultural center where events and exhibitions are held. The visit will be especially interesting for those who like boxing and know Ali as a boxer. But best of all is the building that houses the museum. It's simply spectacular. The museum opened five years or so ago and is exemplary in all aspects. My son enjoyed going up and down the steps of the amphitheater outside. It's very well designed with a waterfall that ends in a fountain. For a rather gray city like Louisville, this place is a gem to have as a cultural center of its kind.
