Explore Stones River National Battlefield
On the last day of 1862 one of the bloodiest conflicts in the American Civil War started. By the time the Battle of Stones River ended on 2 January 1863 each side had suffered the highest percentage of casualties. For many reasons this was one of the major battles of the Civil War. The Battlefield is now part of a 570 acre park managed by the National Park Service. Moments in history such as the Trail of Tears which passed alongside the battlefield and the Emancipation Proclamation which was signed into law on the second day of the battle are interpreted through exhibits in the park. Various trails and roads are scattered throughout the battlefield, with interpretive wayside markers sharing snapshots of the battle complete with quotes from soldiers who fought there. Some of the most significant parts of the battle can be reached in this way, either by wandering yourself through the acres of dense forest and open fields or by following the set self-guided tour route that the park has created. Trail running and photography are also popular in the park. Picnic areas are available and most trails are handicapped accessible. The Visitor Center is open 9-5 every day and the battlefield is accessible to be walked through from sunrise to sunset.
