This trail is not suited for a picnic. You can stop and grab a bite but there is no picnic area. I suggest Chimneys Picnic area off of hwy 441/Newfound Gap Road. There is parking by each picnic table and the Cove Hardwood trail is located there as well.. Beautiful river flows by the picnic grounds too.

This is a very easy trail. If you start at the trailhead at the end of River Road in Gatlinburg, it actually goes to the Sugarland Visitor Center. The wooded portion of the trail ends at the park maintenance facility. There is still .4 miles along this side road to get to the visitor center. Just before getting to hwy 441, you will see a sidewalk on the right. It goes past the Park Headquarters and continues to the visitor center. The trail is flat for the most part with very nice river views. It is 4 miles roundtrip but you could always have someone in a car meet you at the visitor center or vice versa if you start at the visitor center. During the summer months, a trolley goes to the visitor center which you could also take if you did not want to walk both directions. Of course, you can walk as much or as little of the trail as you like. Enjoy.

No. It's just a quick tour through some great nature sites. It can be fit in to a day of several activities. Be prepared for Cades Cove if you go. It's about 30 min drive to get there and then the drive through Cades Cove takes most of the day. They say to allow 4 hours but it could take all day depending on how many times you stop to look at things and on the wildlife stopping traffic.
