From what I've read, I gather that driving the length of Last Dollar Rd. in an ordinary passenger vehicle, even in dry conditions, isn't possible. Is that correct? Assuming it is, I'm not at all averse to walking/hiking large stretches of the road. Is it possible to, say, drive the first few miles (from Ridgway) in a normal passenger vehicle without getting into major trouble? I guess I'm asking is, at what point does the road become a problem? Approaches from each end are OK but the middle section (maybe 8 or 10 miles) is really rough. I would recommend renting a 4 runner or jeep. It is a beautiful drive. Good luck!

Is it possible to ride ATV 4x4 on the Last Dollar Road?

I checked with a friend of mine who is a Ranger for the Forest Service. He said it is under the jurisdiction of San Miguel County but he believes they would not permit unlicensed vehicles on the road. You could contact the county sheriff to be certain.
