Robb Recommends: This Napa Cab Is the Best Wine to Drink With Your Burger This Summer
Where is it written that your Tuesday night wine should be cheaper than your Saturday night bottle? That a steak in the dining room deserves a better pour than a burger on the grill? As is true for so much other long-held wine “wisdom,” it’s high time to retire that “pour any old thing with a burger” notion.

For the past 25 years, it's been the go-to spot for Cal students to bring friends and family while they visit from out of town, and also a place that's hosted many graduation dinners and other celebrations. But after serving the East Bay community for nearly three decades, Chu made the tough decision to close his popular restaurant for good. Shen Hua's last day of business is Sunday, June 26."After long and thoughtful consideration, I have decided that it is time to close Shen Hua," Chu's note read. "The last few years have posed challenges that we continue to face. But even through adversity, I'm encouraged by the resilience of my staff, fellow business owners, and customers."Left to right: Shen Hua's owner Edward Chu posted a note in his restaurant's window about its upcoming closure. A plate of salt-and-pepper squid inside the favored Chinese restaurant.Born and raised in San Francisco, Chu has worked inrestaurantsin one form or another since childhood. He eventually opened his own neighborhood eatery, Shen Hua, in 1998, serving Northern-style Chinese cuisine in sought-after dishes such as spicy, dry-fried chicken, crispy salt and pepper squid and creamy honey walnut prawns.Shen Hua is the latest closure to hit the East Bay restaurant industry and the restaurant cited hardships endured over the past two years brought on by the ongoing pandemic. On May 10,Little Shin Shinon Piedmont Avenue in Oakland permanently closed after serving the community for four decades. It was followed by yet another decades-old restaurant closure in Oakland as Great Wall Chinese, on College Avenue, sold its business to new owners. All three restaurants broke the news to customers with signs hanging in their windows.Honey walnut prawns at Shen Hua.As for Shen Hua, a neighborhood favorite known for its pudgy pot stickers and massive portions of wok-kissed chow mein, regulars and those looking to relive those past celebrations can revel one last time before the beloved restaurant closes its kitchen for good."I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank every one of you for supporting Shen Hua for the last 25 years," Chu wrote. "I appreciate the conversations, friendships, and fond memories I will keep forever."Shen Hua, 2914 College Ave., Berkeley. Diablo Dish: Elia Expands to Walnut Creek
The gorgeous Greek restaurant Elia has done so well on Main Street in Pleasanton that it will soon be coming to Locust Street in Walnut Creek, according to Beyond the Creek. Elia will take over the spot now occupied by Lokanta Mediterranean Grill and Bar (a few doors down from Bonanza Street), though the word is that Lokanta will remain open during the transition.
