Schmankerl Stube founder Charlie Sekula dies

Schmankerl Stube founder Charlie Sekula dies

Back in the late 1980s, many residents had given up on downtown Hagerstown, including the first block of South Potomac Street. "There were a lot of shady places there on South Potomac Street," recalled Hagerstown broadcaster Lou Scally, and he named a few of them. But Gotthard "Charlie" Sekula took a chance anyway, and opened a Bavarian restaurant on the northeast corner of South Potomac and Antietam streets, across from the Washington County Free Library.

A new exhibit at England's University of Oxford marks 100 years since discovery of King Tutankhaman's tomb in Egypt

Unearthed in Egypt a century ago, Tutankhaman's tomb instantly became one of the greatest finds in archaeology: a 19-year-old king in his burial chamber, left largely undisturbed, for over 3,000 years. The discovery propelled English excavator Howard Carter and his photographer Harry Burton to worldwide fame, while the legend of the boy-king and his treasures made headlines and inspired popular culture for decades.

Coventry and Warwickshire eateries snubbed in National Restaurant Awards 2022

A list of all the best restaurants in Britain has been revealed. Sadly, none from Coventry or Warwickshire made the cut. However, local food enthusiasts will be pleased to know that two Birmingham eateries made the list and both are only a 40-minute drive away from Coventry. Launched in 2007, the Estrella Damm National Food Awards celebrate the brilliance and vibrancy of the eating out scene and reward the very best chefs, front-of-house staff and restaurants the country has to offer.

A simple congee recipe for the beloved, adaptable rice porridge

Pierced by winding rivers and dotted with ponds and lakes, the Jiangnan region in China’s lower Yangtze area is famously the home of Shanghai, the country’s biggest city. But Jiangnan is just as well-known for its verdant land and fruitful waters. “The first time I heard Jiangnan referred to as yu mi zhi xiang — the ‘Land of Fish and Rice’ — was as my family and I sped along a small road by Taihu, ‘Lake Tai,’ with a beautiful golden field of rice swaying gently with the breeze on one side,” writes Betty Liu in her gorgeous cookbook, “My Shanghai: Recipes and Stories From a City on the Water.”
