Ronald McDonald House Iowa City seeks donations while kitchen undergoes major remodel

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois is seen Wednesday at 730 Hawkins Drive in Iowa City. Since its opening in 1985, the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City has provided families a place to stay while their child is receiving medical treatment at local hospital. Now, the Ronald McDonald House is seeking the community's help as its kitchen is remodeled in the coming months.

BIZ BYTES: Local distillery opens new downtown Davenport location

A local distillery is now pouring cocktails at its new downtown Davenport location. Mississippi River Distilling Company in LeClaire “soft opened” the “Downtown Lounge” at 318 E. 2nd St. over the weekend. The public grand opening and ribbon cutting is set for 4 p.m. Friday, June 24. The building houses the new cocktail bar and will also house a new state-of-the-art bottling line to help the distillery expand distribution.

Did you know the Iowa State Fair was held on “the island” south of town in 1856 and 1857? From the Muscatine Journal, Oct. 9, 1857: “A squash raised by Alexander Clark weighed 177 pounds, but as Aleck is a colored man, we presume the committee could not, according to the Dred Scott decision, award the premium to him in preference to his mule.
