The name "Androscoggin" comes from the Eastern Abenaki term, meaning "river of cliff rock shelters"; or perhaps from Penobscot, meaning "river of rock shelters". The Anglicization of the Abenaki term is likely an analogical contamination with the colonial governor Edmund Andros.
