Could anyone tell me some background about the "cartoon" like painting of the man at the entrance to the temple (just after the kiosk where you buy your tickets)? I forgot to ask about it while there and am struggling to find any information online. It is also found at the top of this webpage - tenryuji. com /en/about/index.html . I'd like to know if this is modern art work or more historical and what it's meant to represent....or really anything else you might be able to share!

He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Chan Buddhism to China, and regarded as its first Chinese patriarch. According to Chinese legend, he also began the physical training of the monks of Shaolin Monastery that led to the creation of Shaolin Kung Fu. In Japan, he is known as Daruma.
