On June 25, 1920, little Katherine Korthauer was celebrating her birthday with friends when disaster struck. As the Bellingham Herald later reported, “the milk of human kindness turned to ice cream” when “prowling boys swiped” the party’s ice cream. News of the theft reached Bellingham post office clerks and carriers celebrating their annual picnic at nearby Fairhaven Park .

A skate park improvement would mean the removal of the current park and installation of a new one. The design of the new park is based on feedback from area skaters. The Anacortes community has raised $650,000 for a new skate park. The donations came from the Kiwanis Club, the community at large and a significant chunk from an anonymous source.
