High winds knock out power to thousands in Richland County

High winds could accompany strong thunderstorms Sunday afternoon.

MANSFIELD - High winds blew down trees and power lines Sunday afternoon, leaving many without power.

As of 7:00 p.m., Ohio Edison reported 6,955, or 16% of Richland County's customers were without power. AEP Ohio reported 166 customers with outages.

Richland, along with Morrow County, had been under a high wind warning until 7 p.m. — gusts reached up to 60 mph.

Affected areas included Toledo, Bowling Green, Port Clinton, Fremont, Sandusky, Findlay, Tiffin, Norwalk, Upper Sandusky, Bucyrus, Mansfield, Marion, and Mount Gilead.

The National Weather Service had recommended moving to an interior room on the lowest level of a building.

The National Weather Service also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for western Richland County Sunday afternoon that expired at 12:45 p.m.

At noon, radar indicated that thunderstorms were moving northeast at 55 miles per hour along a line extending near Green Springs to Morral.
