Tech track athletes gear up for regional competition

The Texas Tech track and field team has 63 entries in the four-day NCAA West Preliminary meet that starts Wednesday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Tech's 36 entries in women's competition are the most in the country by a team at either the West or East Preliminary. The Tech men have 27 entries. The men's schedule unfolds Wednesday and Friday, the women's on Thursday and Saturday.

Bloomington, Indiana is the site of the East meet.

In most events at each regional, 48 athletes are trimmed to 12 to advance to the NCAA outdoor championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.

On the women's side, Tech has 14 entries in individual events and two relays ranked in the top 10 in the West region. On the men's side, Tech has 12 entries in individual events and one relay ranked in the top 10 in the region.

On Wednesday and Thursday at Arkansas, field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events at 6 p.m. The schedule Friday and Saturday has field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. SEC Network+ is scheduled to air coverage in the evenings when running events start each of the four days.

Men's golf

Texas Tech on Wednesday announced the addition of all-conference players Ethan Davidson from Sacramento State and Tyran Sanders from Memphis as transfers to the program for next season.

Snyders, as a sophomore this school year, placed in the top 20 in seven tournaments, including three times inside the top 10. The South Africa native made the all-American Athletic Conference team. He shot 7 under par and placed third at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and shot 10-under and got fourth at the Quail Valley/Jake Owen Collegiate.

Before Memphis, Snyders won the 41st Boys Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst Country Club where he was 4-under. He was a two-time winner in South Africa on the Premier Tour with wins at the Steenberg Open and Erinvale Open.

Davidson, from Calabasas, California, has spent four years at Sacramento State and been named first-team all-Big Sky each of the past three. He was named Big Sky player of the year this year after setting the school record with a 71.18 stroke average.

His career strokes per round average is 72.82. He was the Big Sky tournament champion in April 2021 and the Nick Watney Invitational champion in September. He has seven career top-five finishes.

Snyders and Davidson join Matthew Comegys from Plano West in the signing class. Comegys won the UIL Class 6A state championship this month.

Women's tennis

Texas Tech announced the addition of Florida International transfer Andjela Skrobonja, who went 24-6 in singles and 22-4 in doubles the past two seasons with FIU. Skrobonja, a native of Serbia, will be a junior for Tech next season.

Skrobonja played No. 3 singles for the Panthers, going 14-4 this year. She went 12-3 in doubles with playing partner Kamila Umarova and earned first-team all-Conference USA honors.
