West Virginia passes 10,000 coronavirus cases

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia has surpassed 10,000 total cases of the coronavirus for the pandemic with 1,914 reported cases being active.

According to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, 10,110 cases have been reported to state officials as of Sunday morning. The agency received 143 cases between its Saturday and Sunday reports.

Officials also confirmed a 213th death connected to the pandemic; the department announced the death of an 89-year-old Kanawha County male.

Monroe County is at the red level in the color-coded county alert system — the highest level possible — while Kanawha and Logan counties remain orange.

The department also reported 141 West Virginians are hospitalized with 45 people in intensive care units. Twenty-one people are on ventilators.
