Teen robs library to buy gift, police say

LAPEER COUNTY, MI – A 17-year-old is accused of robbing a Lapeer District Library branch to get enough money to purchase a gift.

Richard Bohn, of Metamora, was arraigned Friday, Nov. 8 in 71-A District Court in Lapeer on charges of armed robbery and felony firearm.

Deputies with the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched shortly before 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 for an armed robbery that’d occurred at the Lapeer District Library – Hadley Branch located at 3556 Hadley Road in Hadley Township.

A 34-year-old female librarian reported a man wearing all black clothing, sunglasses, and camouflage mesh covering his faced pointed a chrome revolver at her and demanded money.

Bohn left the library through a rear door with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one else was inside the library at the time of the robbery. The librarian was not injured, police said.

A witness outside the library spotted Bohn get on a bicycle and travel north of Hadley Road. Bohn was later seen traveling into a subdivision.

The Michigan State Police Canine Division from the Lapeer Post and Metamora Township Police Officers responded to assist deputies. A track was immediately started that corresponded with the witness statement.

The bicycle, clothing, weapon, and stolen money were recovered by police in a wooded area roughly one-half mile from the library and near a subdivision. Police learned the weapon’s registered owner lived within the subdivision.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the owner’s residence but were unsuccessful in contacting anyone inside.

The homeowner and parent of the suspect had been in contact with law enforcement by phone. There was information provided that numerous weapons were inside the home.

The parent agreed to leave work and respond home. The parent was able to establish phone contact and facilitate a peaceful surrender by Bohn around 4:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Bohn was taken into custody by police and lodged at the Lapeer County Jail.

Deputies determined that the armed robbery occurred for financial gain so a gift could be purchased.

Bohn is due back in court Friday, Nov. 15 for a probable cause conference.
