Trainer Neville Parnham hasn’t committed to a Melbourne campaign yet for Platoon after the Railway Stakes placegetter made a solid return at today’s Belmont Park trials.

After struggling in the early stages of his 1000m trial, Platoon ran on solidly from last of five to finish one-length fourth to Carocapo.

Parnham expects to make a call on whether the Playing God gelding, who ran a close third to Regal Power in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), races in Melbourne or WA by next week.

“He got home well and pulled up a bit big,” Parnham said.

“I’m tossing up whether to take him over or stay here.

“There’s only one race for him here and that’s the Bunbury Stakes.”

A winner at four of 21 starts, Platoon holds a nomination for the $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield next month.

Carocapo, a winner of his past three starts at Ascot, led all the way for apprentice Chloe Azzopardi to narrowly beat Beethoven in today’s trial.

“He’ll have another trial and run in a 78-plus 1200 on March 14,” trainer Jim Taylor said.
