Dangerous arctic air is moving into Mississippi, according to 16 WAPT meteorologists.
16 WAPT meteorologists say a strong arctic cold front will push into the region bringing rain Monday evening, followed by cold arctic air Monday night into Tuesday. The rain could end as a little light sleet overnight Monday, but no accumulation is expected on roads or bridges.
Strong north winds will make temperatures near 30 feel more like the lower teens Tuesday morning, and those winds will keep the feels-like temperatures in the 20s for much of Tuesday.
The city of Jackson is advising residents to take precautions before the extreme cold weather sets in. City officials say the cold weather will have an effect on the city's water distribution system and may result in higher than normal water main failures. If residents experience low water pressure or see any water main failures, they are asked to call the city's 311 action line.
The city also says taking these steps will help minimize damage to water pipes during freezing temperatures:
- Wrap any exposed pipes with insulation to help protect them from freezing weather.
- Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around plumbing, especially if your sinks are on the exterior walls of your home.
- Let cold water drip from any faucet served by exposed pipes.
- Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night.
