SD active COVID-19 cases reach record 2,730 on Monday

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota has 2,730 active COVID-19 cases, a new record for total active cases in the state.

In all, the South Dakota Department of Health Monday, Aug. 31, reported 13,509 total positive cases, up 187 from Sunday. Of those cases, 10,612 have recovered, 76 remain hospitalized and 167 have died from COVID-19.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally contributed to 105 positive cases in the state, not including case reports in other states related to the rally.

Minnehaha County has 556 active cases as of Monday, Aug. 31. Pennington County has 447 active cases.

Gov. Kristi Noem spoke at a Rotary event in Sioux Falls Monday, during which she attributed the rising case number to the opening of schools and universities.

In the town of Vermillion, home of the University of South Dakota, bars have closed for a week to help stop the spread of COVID-19 as students settle in to the first weeks of a semester on campus during the pandemic.
