KALAMAZOO, Mich. — In a multi-state recall, Meijer stores voluntarily removed cantaloupe from store shelves as a part of a sampling investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Investigators said they are concerned about the potential risk of salmonella in the fruit products, including whole cantaloupes as well as select cuts in trays and bowls. The cantaloupe was sold in varying weights, from 6 ounces to 40, between Sept. 26 and Oct. 5, at Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indian, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Meijer company officials, in a written statement on the recall, said no illnesses have been reported.
The recalled products are labeled with Kandy Brand from Eagle Produce, LLC, but even if there is no label, store officials said, it should be considered part of the recall. Meijer also said it might have used cantaloupe ingredients that originated from Eagle in a number of store-made products, in clear plastic containers. Those include:
Salmonella is a bacterial disease that attacks the intestinal track. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Consumers who have purchased the cantaloupe should throw it away or return it to the nearest Meijer store for a full refund.
Consumers with questions can call Meijer at 800-543-3704, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
