The annual Florida Redevelopment Association Awards recently named the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge in Pompano Beach the winner of the Best Transportation Transit Enhancement category.

Awarding the honor on Nov. 19, the FRA accepts entries for the annual awards from its members in a variety of categories. Judged on effectiveness and completeness, a group of the state’s redevelopment professionals, individuals and business organizations rank all the entries and select the winners.

Centered on creating a sense of community, the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency developed the bridge to serve as a landmark and a symbolic welcome for residents and visitors.

Pompano Beach CRA director Nguyen Tran emphasized the group effort required to complete the project.

“We are honored to have this outstanding project recognized by FRA,” he said in a statement. “And we appreciate everyone who worked with us on the beautiful transformation of this bridge including the city of Pompano Beach, Currie Sowards Aguila Architects, Burkhardt Construction and artist Dennis Friel.”

The bridge features two large sails at opposite ends that include a computer-operated lighting system that allows them to change colors for special occasions.

Aspects involved in the enhancement also included grand bridge entrances, repurposed pedestrian walkways and tender house facade improvements.
