NJ Nurses 'Real Savages In The Box:' New York Yankees Star

FLEMINGTON, NJ - They were supposed to be attending their first Yankee game of 2020 season together, but with the Major League Baseball season delayed, these ICU nurses instead were on the field taking on the novel coronavirus, or COVID19, Monday and that caught the attention of some Bronx Bombers.

Emma Beltrandi took a photo taken of her mother Janet and her coworkers at the Intensive Care Unit at the Hunterdon Medical Center and tweeted it out to some New York Yankee luminaries. And a couple of them stepped up to the plate to respond.

"Grateful for the excellent work, we are fortunate to have great people saved (sic) life in this difficult situation," infielder Gleyber Torres responded. "That is some real savages in the box."

Torres is referencing a famous moment during the 2019 baseball season last July when Yankees Manager Aaron Boone was ejected from a game for berating an umpire and telling him his players were (expletive deleted) savages in the box. Boone was saying the Yankees are savage on pitchers because they take pitches and work the count.

Torres alluded that the nurses were savages taking on the pandemic.

Those sentiments were echoed by all-star catcher Gary Sanchez.

"Dope. Thank you for sharing," Sanchez wrote. "And thank your mome (sic) and her coworkers on behalf of all of us."

Yankees broadcast analyst, YES Network host and ESPN Radio personality Michael Kay had an offer of his own.

"Thanks to your mom and her co workers for all they are doing and for showing us what a hero really is all about," Kay said, noting that the group should drop by the Yes Network booth during a future telecast for an in-person thank you.
