A popular Neutrogena acne light therapy has been urgently recalled over fears it could cause eye damage.

The defect Visibly Clear Light Therapy Acne Mask is reported to cause mild transient visual loss, causing concerns about the safety of blue light on the eyes.

Customers with underlying eye conditions including retinitis pigmentosa, ocular albinism or other hereditary ocular disorders may be at risk of retinal damage.

Similarly, users who are on medications that enhance ocular photosensitivity could also be at risk.

The light therapy acne mask should be immediately returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The product was sold across Australia online, at chemists, pharmacies and in Priceline stores.

The red and blue lights of the device were built to target acne-causing bacteria, reducing the appearance of breakouts.

With daily 10 minute treatments, the device claims to reduce breakouts, allow skin to heal itself from within and visibly improve skin appearance.

Customers can contact supplier Johnson & Johnson Pacific Consumer Care Centre for further information on the recall.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Johnson & Johnson for comment.
