PRINSBURG — Cellar dwelling in the standings last season, Central Minnesota Christian battled MACCRAY on Tuesday with the Camden Conference North Division at stake.

Holding the high-powered Wolverines 24 points under their season average, the Bluejays claimed the North crown with a 60-50 victory inside of a frenzied Central Minnesota Christian School gymnasium.

MACCRAY was held to 31-percent shooting from the field.

“I’m super proud of the guys, big-time team win,” CMCS head coach Ted Taatjes said. “We’re about five guys on the floor sharing the ball, moving the ball. We guarded really well.
“That’s an awesome shooting team over there and also we forced them to one shot per possession. We blocked out well, stuck to the game plan and gutted it out. It was fun.”

Trailing 27-25 to begin the second half, the hosts controlled play through the first six minutes after halftime. Recording stops on eight of MACCRAY’s 11 second-half possessions, CMCS pulled out to a 42-34 following a wing 3-pointer from sophomore Case Mulder.

Calling a timeout with 11 minutes, 36 seconds remaining, the Wolverines chipped into the deficit. Junior guard Brady Kienitz started a 9-1 run with a 3-pointer, and capped the surge with a pair from the free-throw line, cutting CMCS’ cushion to 45-43.

However, whenever the visitors rallied, the Bluejays countered. Senior Austin TeBrake buried a well-contested baseline jump shot to bump the advantage back up to 47-43. Wolverines sophomore forward Brooks Asche drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the key to close the gap to 49-48, but the home team responded on the ensuing possession when Jay Marcus electrified the crowd with a three-point play on a drive into the paint.

From there, the home team closed the game, scoring eight of the game’s last 10 points.

Mulder and TeBrake each paced CMCS with 18 points. The senior earned a double-double after grabbing 11 rebounds. Peter Martin added 10 points.

MACCRAY was out in front through the majority of a first half highlighted by a milestone for senior forward Blake Wadsworth. After drawing a shooting foul late moments before halftime, Wadsworth stepped to the line and made the first of a pair of free throws to reach 1,000 points for his career.
