Out for a day of exploring New Smyrna Beach, Flagler/Palm Coast News-Tribune editor Aaron London and his wife, Kim, decided to take a break and enjoy a quick dinner. Finding themselves already on the beachside, they stopped by one of their favorite Mexican restaurants, Mi Mexico.

What is the place like?

The open space in the restaurant invites diners to sit back and relax and enjoy a cold drink and conversation while perusing the expansive menu. The restaurant has a cozy feel and while a lot of visitors find their way there, it is clear that it is a local favorite.

What's on the menu?

In addition to a range of appetizers, from quesadillas, guacamole and Mi Mexico chicken wings to a simple bean dip, Mi Mexico also gives diners options from soups and salads to several varieties of burritos, fajitas and nachos. In addition, diners can choose from an extensive selection of vegetarian dishes, seafood fare with a Mexican flair, grilled specialties or create their own combination.

What did you order?

For Aaron, the test of any Mexican restaurant is the taco salad. And Mi Mexico's version did not disappoint. With a crispy flour tortilla on the outside, the salad was overstuffed with perfectly seasoned ground beef, peppers, onions, tomatoes and lettuce and covered with cheese, guacamole and sour cream. The large tortilla provided a welcome crunchiness that complemented the mixture of beef and fresh vegetables. Kim opted to go lighter and chose the grilled chicken salad, a heaping pile of seasoned chicken over a large bed of greens with tomatoes, onions and your choice of dressing.

What about dessert?

While passing on dessert, a quick look at the menu revealed several tempting treats to top off the meal. Choices ranged from churros with ice cream, sopapillas, and varieties of dessert chimichangas including banana, chocolate and cheesecake.

What did all this cost?

With everything except the tip the bill came to $24.74.
