The mother of a cheerleader who was raped and murdered said her body was so badly bruised it looked like she had 'fallen from a plane'.

Cayley Mandadi from San Antonio, Texas, was virtually unrecognisable when her near-dead body was found in October 2017.

Her injuries became central to a murder trial in which her boyfriend was accused of sexually assaulting and killing her.

A new CBS News documentary will look at the last 48 hours leading up to the Trinity University student's death.

The 19-year-old was last seen alive at Mala Luna music festival with her boyfriend Mark Howerton.

But later that day she was rushed to hospital by Howerton with massive injuries.

Her mother Allison Steele told 48 hours: “Even the most explicit television shows, don’t show you what I saw that day.

"Did she fall out of an airplane? Was she thrown off a bridge?”

Cayley was brain dead and succumbed to her injuries on October 31.

Authorities found she had died of blunt force trauma to the head and charged Howerton with raping and murdering her in February 2018.

Howerton claimed they had fought and then had rough sex in his car.

Prosecutors made the case in court that Howerton was abusive to Mandadi and beat her to death in his car during a drive from San Antonio to Houston when she tried to break up with him.

But Howerton's defence counsel argued there were no eyewitnesses to prove he was responsible for the death, and said her injuries were from a fall and prolonged medical intervention by hospital staff.

His lawyer told 48 hours: "Mark was possessive, angry, he was a jerk....That doesn't make him a murderer.

"This is a case where there is more than meets the eye and things aren't always as they seem.

A retrial date in the case was set in July for August 21.
