Week 4 football roundup: Central loses, Zion Christian wins

Week four featured plenty of rough outings for several of the area teams.

Summit lost its first game of the season while Columbia, Columbia Academy, Mt. Pleasant and Summertown all lost games by 15 or more points.

On the lighter side of things, Independence cruised to another easy win while Zion Christian held on late to win its shootout against Sales Creek.

Here's a look at how the teams in Southern Middle Tennessee fared.

Giles County 42, Columbia 13

A week after being held scoreless by Summit, the Columbia offense struggled to get anything going against Giles County.

The Lions had no answer for Bobcats running back Chaye McElroy who finished the game with 171 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.

While the Bobcats rushed for nearly 330 yards and had over 450 total yards of offense, the Lions offense struggled to get anything going. Central finished the evening with just over 180 yards of total offense.

Zion Christian 48, Sale Creek 42

In a game that featured very little defense, a huge defensive play in the waning seconds sealed the win for the Eagles. Leading by six, Max Brown picked off a Sale Creek pass in the end zone to give Zion Christian its second consecutive win.

The Eagles got another huge game out of quarterback Luke Perko. Perko was 6-of-13 through the air for 169 yards and three touchdowns. However, most of Perko's damage came on the ground. He rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Sam Sullivan was the beneficiary of Perko's success through the air. He finished the game with five receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns.

DCA 31, Summertown 14

Six months after a tornado ripped through its campus, DCA held its first home game of the season.

Playing this game on short notice, the Summertown offense struggled to get much going. Tied at seven in the first quarter, DCA would go on to score 17 consecutive points before Summertown would find the end zone again.

DCA would outscore Summertown 24-7 following the first quarter.

Fayetteville 56, Mt. Pleasant 20

After a couple of close losses to open the season, there was nothing close in this game as Fayetteville struck early and often en route to a 30-0 halftime lead.

The scoring for Fayetteville didn't stop in the second half as they outscored Mt. Pleasant 26-20 over the remaining 24 minutes.

While it was a rough game overall for Mt. Pleasant, the Tigers did get a big game out of Keevan Cooper. He rushed for 131 yards on three rushes and added two touchdowns on the ground. Cooper also scored on a 93-yard kickoff return.

Franklin 27, Summit 20

Summit High School Head Coach Brian Coleman speaks to the team following a defeat against Franklin High School in Spring Hill, Tenn., on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020.

It was an uncharacteristically bad game through the air for Destin Wade as he finished 5-of-12 for 36 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions as Summit fell behind to Franklin 13-7 at the half.

Wade got the Spartans offense going in the second half on the ground as he busted touchdown runs of 46 and 73 yards to tie the game at 20 going into the fourth quarter. Wade finished the game with 195 yards on the ground.

Franklin would seal the win in the fourth though behind its offensive line and ground game. The Admirals finished the game with 231 yards on the ground and sealed the win with a 15-yard touchdown reception to Carson Repass with just over three minutes remaining.

Independence 28, Blackman 7

Independence's quarterback Jaxson Campbell (8) runs the option during the game against Blackman on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020, at Blackman.

Jaxson Campbell had no issues against the Blaze defense as he accounted for 265 total yards and four touchdowns.

Finishing with three rushing touchdowns, Campbell propelled the Eagles to a 28-0 lead through the first three quarters.

Independence held the struggling Blaze offense to 273 total yards of offense and allowed the only Blackman touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
