Week 5 Roundup: Central wins in dramatic fashion; Independence and Zion Christian continue to roll

While week four of the season saw more blowouts than losses, week five seemed to have more of a flare for the dramatic with several games coming down to the wire.

For Columbia Academy and Columbia Central, both games came down to key fourth-quarter plays while Zion Christian and Independence both claimed their third consecutive victories.

Here's a look at how the teams in Southern Middle Tennessee fared Friday night.

Nashville Christian 21, Columbia Academy 6

The Bulldogs' offensive woes continued in week five as Columbia Academy managed 140 yards of total offense and turned the ball over three times.

It wasn't a pretty showing for either offense as they combined for five total interceptions but Nashville Christian's ground game and ability to turn turnovers into points proved to be the difference.

Nashville Christian rushed for 207 yards and scored all three of its touchdowns on the ground.

Heading into the fourth quarter Columbia Academy trailed by one but the Bulldogs would throw back-to-back interceptions late in the quarter with Nashville Christian turning both into touchdowns.

Lewis County 42, Summertown 21

Trailing by seven at the half, Summertown had no answer for Lewis County in the second half as the Panthers outscored the Tigers 27-13 over the final 24 minutes.

A long fumble returned for a touchdown by Javen Edmiston was the highlight of the night for Summertown as it tied the game at eight before Lewis County would pull away for good.

On 43 carries Lewis County rushed for 375 yards and five touchdowns.

Columbia 30, Lincoln County 21

Central took a 20-0 within the first 14 minutes but the Lions offense sputtered over the next two and a half quarters leaving the door open for Lincoln County to eventually come back and take a second-half lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, Central finally found its way back on the scoreboard courtesy of a 33-yard field goal. From there the Lions defense forced two three and outs and they sealed the win with a short touchdown run.

Brady McCanless had his best game in weeks as the senior quarterback finished the night 14-of-23 for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, it was Justin Buchmann who was the sparkplug for the Lions offense as he finished the evening with 115 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns.

Zion Christian 41, Lakeway Christian 6

The Eagles offense continues to roll behind the arm and legs of quarterback Luke Perko. Perko was 6-of-15 for 104 yards through the air while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Zion Christian helped Lakeway Christian 95 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers.

Independence 21, Franklin 7

While it's been Independence's offense that's received most of the recognition this season, the Eagles defense had a night to remember in a win over Franklin.

A week after Franklin rushed for over 200 yards and scored 27 points on Summit, Independence held the Admirals to 267 yards of total offense and the lone touchdown.

Offensively, Independence was once again led by Jaxson Campbell who finished with 178 yards and a touchdown through the air while also rushing for 127 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Calvin Wilson was Campbell's favorite target as Wilson finished the evening with 117 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.
