Isabella County Sergeant Charged with Aggravated Assault of an Inmate

An Isabella County sergeant has been charged with harming an inmate during a cell transfer.

Video evidence shows that in April 2020, sergeant Christopher Cluley pushed an inmate into a cell before pushing him to the ground. An x-ray showed that the inmate fractured his left knee in his fall to the floor.

Cluley was placed on administrative leave the following day while the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department conducted an internal investigation

He is charged with two counts of misconduct in office and one count of aggravated assault. The two counts of misconduct are five-year felonies while the aggravated assault charge is a one-year misdemeanor.

Cluley was arraigned Wednesday morning and is scheduled for a probable cause conference on Oct. 14. He was given a $21,000 personal recognizance bond and was ordered to have no contact with the victim, no assaultive conduct and is not allowed to leave the state without the court’s permission.
