Coronavirus In PA: 73K Cases, State Meets Testing Goal For May

PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania's coronavirus case count passed 73,000 after 511 additional positive cases were reported Wednesday. The statewide total of cases now stands at 73,405. There have been 5,742 total COVID-19 deaths, an increase of 75 from the day before.

The developments come as the remaining counties prepare to move to the yellow phase of mitigation on Friday.

Gov. Tom Wolf on Wednesday said the state Department of Health reached its testing goals in May, with more than 283,000 COVID-19 tests. The department achieved its 2 percent testing goal for the month by more than 11 percent, the governor's office said.

The state expects testing to increase as various Walmart and Quest Diagnostics on Friday will open drive-thru testing locations across the state will provide testing for residents living in areas with fewer testing sites. "No COVID-19 testing will take place inside Walmart stores or Quest Diagnostics Patient Service Centers" the governor's office said.

"As Pennsylvania continues to move forward in the process to reopen, we need to remember that the threat from COVID-19 has not gone away," Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. "As counties move into the yellow and green phases, we must take personal responsibility to protect others."
