Matthew McConaughey appeared on The Tonight Show on Friday to talk about the relief benefit concert he’s hosting in Texas this weekend.
But first, he and late-night host Jimmy Fallon bonded briefly about their affection for airstreams. Jimmy appeared from his own airstream, while McConaughey said he has three of them in his yard and he and his family slept in one the night before.
The conversation then turned to the Dallas Buyers Club actor’s book Greenlights, which was written not as a traditional memoir, but more of a “playbook” based on adventures from his life.
Noting that it’s still a number one New York Times bestseller, Fallon asked if there might be a sequel one day. “I don’t want to re-scramble the souffle,” McConaughey joked, adding that he’d love to write something else at some point. He went through 36 journals for the book, but only used 25 percent of the material — so there is plenty more to be mined.
On the speculation that he will one day run for Governor for Texas, McConaughey addressed the rumor by explaining, “It’s something I’m giving consideration. Absolutely. What an honorable thing to even be able to consider,” said the actor, before becoming tight-lipped. “I’m no further than that right now, Sir.”
Speaking about the recent Texas storms, the actor confirmed that his family are all fine. “We had a couple pipes break,” he said, adding that they did have to boil water for a time. He clarified that tens of thousands of people were in far worse shape.
This Sunday, McConaughey will host the benefit concert “We’re Texas,” with performances from Kelly Clarkson, Post Malone, Khalid, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Gary Clark Jr. and many more. Among those making appearances will be Jamie Foxx, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Woody Harrelson. The event, which will stream on YouTube, will benefit McConaughey’s “Just Keep Livin” relief fund.
The actor is currently in talks to star in the HBO limited series A Time for Mercy, an adaptation of John Grisham’s novel and a sequel to A Time to Kill. McConaughey would reprise his role from the 1996 crime drama.
