Buffalo Bills sign Cincinnati Bengals free-agent tackle-turned-tight-end Jake Fisher

The former OT is working out as a tight end.

Matt Warren is Associate Director of NFL coverage for SB Nation and previously covered the Bills for Buffalo Rumblings for more than a decade.

The Buffalo Bills are still very thin at tight end. On Friday, they hosted free agent tight end Jake Fisher, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Keim, the Washington-based NFL reporter, notes Fisher had a workout there, as well. The same day, the Buffalo Bills signed Fisher to a “prove-it deal” on a one year contract, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Fisher’s NFL experience comes at offensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. This offseason, he lost weight to get down to 285 pounds in order to be a blocking tight end. Fisher has played in 48 games in his four years in the NFL, starting 12 for the Bengals at offensive tackle. He has one career NFL reception. He’s a former second-round pick out of Oregon.

Buffalo has stressed positional versatility all offseason on the offensive line, and Fisher has played all five line positions in addition to tight end.

The Bills only have Fisher’s former teammate Tyler Kroft and 2017 undrafted free agent Jason Croom on the roster at tight end. We assumed another move was coming in addition to a draft pick and this might be the type of low-end signing teams use to fill out rosters.

According to Ryan Talbot of NewYorkUpstate.com, the deal is for the veteran minimum. With four years of experience, that means he’ll make $805,000.
